Design of functional glycerol-based deep eutectic solvents as reaction media for enzymatic deacidification of high-acid rice bran oil

Shuting Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of glycerol-based deep eutectic solvents (DES) and lipases for enzymatic esterification of high-acid rice bran oil (HRBO), achieving a deacidification efficiency of 92.38% under optimized conditions. Molecular docking simulation showed that Novozym 435 had better performance compared to Lipozyme TL IM and Lipozyme RM IM. Furthermore, important components like gamma-oryzanols, tocopherols and tocotrienols were retained during the deacidification process.

A bio-based epoxy resin derived from p-hydroxycinnamic acid with high mechanical properties and flame retardancy

Xin Song et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of a p-hydroxycinnamic acid-derived epoxy monomer (HCA-EP) and its curing with 4,4/-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) to prepare epoxy resins. The resulting HCA-EP-DDM resins exhibit higher glass transition temperature, impressive mechanical properties, and pass flammability tests. These findings provide a simple way to use p-hydroxycinnamic acid as a sustainable alternative to bisphenol A in constructing high-performance bio-based thermosets.

Closed-Loop Recyclable Fully Bio-Based Epoxy Vitrimers from Ferulic Acid-Derived Hyperbranched Epoxy Resin

Liuyue Zhong et al.

Summary: This study synthesized a ferulic acid-based hyperbranched epoxy resin (FEHBP) to produce closed-loop recyclable and catalyst-free epoxy vitrimers with improved mechanical performance. The incorporation of FEHBP enhanced the tensile strength and toughness of the epoxy vitrimers through an in situ reinforcing and toughening mechanism. The hydroxyls of FEHBP catalyzed the dynamic transesterification and accelerated the reprocessing of epoxy vitrimers.

Biodiesel feedstock and crude oil price relationships - The effects of policy and shale oil expansion

K. Aleks Schaefer et al.

Summary: This study examines the impacts of biodiesel incentives and shale oil expansion on the price relationships between biodiesel feedstocks and crude oil in the US and EU. The results show that US policies have increased the responsiveness of certain feedstock prices to crude oil price movements, but the global supply expansion of shale oil has offset these effects. In the EU, specific policies have reduced the sensitivity of biodiesel feedstock prices to crude oil price changes.

Fen Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, malleable and recyclable poly(epoxy imine) covalent adaptable networks (CANs) with tunable mechanical properties were synthesized using a novel two-step procedure with epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), vanillin (VAN), and diamines. The structure and mechanical properties of the poly(epoxy imine) CANs can be easily controlled by changing the structure of the diamine. The CANs showed various functionalities including reprocessability, recyclability, and weldability owning to the dynamic imine bonds.

Preparation and properties of novel bio-based epoxy resin thermosets from lignin oligomers and cardanol

Guifeng Liu et al.

Summary: A series of lignin-based epoxy resins (LEPs) were prepared and blended with renewable epoxied cardanol glycidyl ether (ECGE), then cured with methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MeTHPA) to form high-performance epoxy thermosets. The incorporation of ECGE and separation of monomer-rich fractions from lignin oligomers improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the cured products significantly. These bio-based epoxy resins show potential as renewable alternatives to BPA epoxy resins.

Synthesis and characterization of different soybean oil-based polyols with fatty alcohol and aromatic alcohol

Fukai Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, five soybean oil-based polyols were prepared by ring-opening the epoxy groups in epoxidized soybean oil with different alcohols as catalysts. The molecular weight of the polyols increased compared to the starting material, and the structure of the monomers significantly affected the properties of the polyols. Polyols prepared with certain monomers exhibited lower hydroxyl numbers due to further dehydration reactions, leading to the formation of dimers and multimers. The viscosity of the polyols varied depending on the monomer used, with some leading to larger molecular weights and higher viscosities.
