Two carriages for efficient furfural production from biomass: Rational design of porous biochar catalyst and clever utilization of butyrolactone-water medium

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficient conversion of bagasse pith biomass to furfural was achieved using a carbon-based solid acid catalyst and a water-butyrolactone co-solvent system. The combination of the catalyst and co-solvent allowed for high furfural yield by breaking down the biomass structure and facilitating hydrolysis and dehydration reactions. The experiment resulted in a 90.5% furfural yield under specific conditions.

Isolation of cellulose fibers from wetland reed grass through an integrated subcritical water hydrolysis-pulping-bleaching process

Falguni Pattnaik et al.

Summary: Cellulose fibers were successfully isolated from wetland reed grass using a consolidated subcritical water hydrolysis method, followed by pulping and bleaching processes. The use of subcritical water hydrolysis resulted in a higher yield and crystallinity index of cellulose fibers, reducing the severity of subsequent pulping and bleaching conditions.

Improvement in the physicochemical characteristics of biochar derived from solid digestate of food waste with different moisture contents

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: The management of digestate from food waste (DFW) is a global challenge. Pyrolysis is a promising technology for producing biochar from DFW. However, the high salt and moisture content in DFW affects the properties of biochar generated. This study found that increasing moisture content resulted in more micropore and mesopore structures in the biochar, increasing the surface area. Moisture also promoted changes in oxygen-containing functional groups and the formation of amorphous carbon structures, enhancing the adsorption properties of the biochar. Pyrolysis stabilized metals in the biochar, unaffected by moisture content.

A review of thermocatalytic conversion of biogenic wastes into crude biofuels and biochemical precursors

Falguni Pattnaik et al.

Summary: The increase in global population and industrialization has led to a significant rise in biogenic wastes. These wastes have the potential to be a valuable source of energy as an alternative to nonrenewable fossil fuels. Thermochemical technologies offer effective solutions for converting waste biomass into biofuels and valuable biochemicals. However, non-catalytic thermochemical conversion technologies face challenges such as low yields, undesired byproducts, and higher levels of heteroatoms that impact the quality of the final fuel products. This review article explores innovative catalytic approaches to address these challenges and evaluates the impact of catalysts on the production of biofuels and biochemicals through various thermochemical conversion technologies.

Biswa R. Patra et al.

Summary: This study focuses on converting food waste and agricultural crop residues to biochar and bio-oil through slow pyrolysis, optimizing process parameters to achieve maximum yields, and conducting physicochemical, spectroscopic, and microscopic characterization of the products. High temperatures during pyrolysis increase the carbon content and thermal stability of biochar, and bio-oil produced at higher temperatures contains phenolics and aromatic compounds.
