Role of Tailor-Made Additives in Crystallization from Solution: A Review

Yin Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper systematically summarizes the role of tailor-made additives (TMAs) in solution crystallization. It discusses the effects and action mechanisms of TMAs on crystal nucleation and growth, introduces the applications of TMAs in regulating crystal properties, and discusses the recent progress of molecular simulation in predicting the role of TMAs. It also analyzes the existing problems in this field and provides an outlook on future development. This paper is helpful and useful to readers interested in the use of TMAs to control crystallization and design crystals with desired properties.

Analysis of crystallization and deposition process using electrochemical-quartz crystal microbalance: A review

Xiaoyu Zhao et al.

Summary: Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) is a scientific instrument based on the piezoelectric effect of quartz crystals, offering versatile, reliable, and sensitive in-situ sensing capabilities for small quantity variations. QCM and Electrochemical-QCM (EQCM) techniques have been used for precise analysis and control of crystallization and electrodeposition processes, providing implicit information through complex frequency changes. The future applications of QCM in this field show great potential and promise.

Unveiling the Role of Additives in Modifying Crystallization Behaviors of 4-(Hydroxymethyl) Benzoic Acid

Xiaowei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence mechanism of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) on the crystal morphology of 4-(hydroxymethyl) benzoic acid (p-HMBA) through experiments and molecular simulations. The results showed that PVP hindered the nucleation and growth of p-HMBA crystals, with a stronger inhibition effect on axial growth. Molecular simulations revealed that the hydrogen-bonding interaction between PVP and p-HMBA molecules inhibited the nucleation rate of the p-HMBA crystals.

In-situ analysis of self-assembled monolayer induced polymorphism in controlled crystallization of carbamazepine using quartz crystal microbalance technique

Xiaoyu Zhao et al.

Summary: Compared with traditional control methods, a heterogeneous functional monolayer is an effective approach to induce desired crystal forms in the drug crystallization process under easier control conditions. This study also demonstrates the crystallization process of template-induced heterogeneous nucleation and investigates the crystallization growth mechanisms through molecular modeling.

Investigation on the Solvent Effect in Vanillin Habit Evolution

Shihao Zhang et al.

Summary: The relationship between solvents and crystal habit is crucial for crystal engineering. This paper investigates the impact of different solvents on the habit of vanillin crystals. The results reveal that the crystal habit of vanillin is closely related to the solvent type. Organic acids lead to short and thick plate-like crystals, while the anti-solvent water elongates crystals to needle-like shapes. In contrast, alkane solvents have no effect on the habit. The study also explores the molecular assembly preferences of vanillin and the mechanism underlying the solvent effect on crystal habit through various analytical techniques.

The polymorph and crystal habit control of DL-methionine assisted by ultrasound

Zhixu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of ultrasound field, supersaturation, and temperature on the crystal form of DL-methionine were investigated. Ultrasound was found to promote the formation of metastable crystals and improve the bulk density of the product through optimization of crystal habit and size distribution. The use of artificial neural network for crystal form prediction was also explored.

Insights into Intermolecular Interactions of Spironolactone Solvates

Lihong Jia et al.

Summary: Experimental and computational studies were conducted to investigate the effect of weak interactions in solvate formation and structure-property correlation of SPI. Four novel solvates were found, and the crystal structures of five solvates were resolved for the first time. The strongest interaction observed in SPI solvates is the stacking of the steroid ring system via van der Waals forces, contributing to their relatively superior stability.
