PEPT validated CFD-DEM model of aspherical particle motion in a spouted bed

Hanqiao Che et al.

Summary: Computational Fluid Dynamics coupled with Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) was used to model the dynamics of aspherical particles in a spouted bed. The CFD-DEM results were rigorously validated against experimental data acquired using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). The study showed that the Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and restitution coefficient did not significantly affect the system's dynamics, and that Gidaspow's correlation using equivalent intrinsic particle density was suitable for modelling drag forces. The analysis demonstrated that the PEPT-validated CFD-DEM models accurately captured key features of the system, including particle circulation time, velocity and occupancy distributions, and residence time in different regions. The study also showed that models using simple, spherical particles could quantitatively reproduce the dynamics of highly aspherical materials.

Numerical investigation of the particle circulation characteristics in a tapered fluidized bed

Hanqiao Che et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to investigate the particle circulation characteristics in a tapered fluidized bed (TFB). The study explores an appropriate method to quantify particle circulation time, the effects of operational parameters on particle circulation time, and the relationship between particle mixing and particle circulation. The findings suggest that air velocity, wall inclination angle, particle size, inter-particle cohesive forces, and the open area ratio of the central region of the air distributor all have significant effects on particle circulation. The study provides valuable insights for the design, optimization, and control of processes involving TFBs.

Mass transfer in conical spouted beds equipped with internal devices

Xabier Sukunza et al.

Summary: The gas-solid contact in spouted beds is characterized by high heat and mass transfer rates. The mass transfer coefficient in conical spouted beds equipped with internal devices can be accurately predicted using a new correlation that takes into account bed material properties, air inlet temperature and velocity, and dimensions of the internals.

Coarse-Grain DEM Modelling in Fluidized Bed Simulation: A Review

Alberto Di Renzo et al.

Summary: In the past decade, the application of CFD-DEM for fluidized beds has expanded from small, lab-scale units to larger scale systems, benefiting greatly from coarse graining methods. By introducing coarse graining procedures based on different physical backgrounds, the number of particles that can be simulated has increased, covering pilot-scale and industrially relevant systems. The review discusses scaling for contact forces, hydrodynamic forces, and cohesive forces, quantifying computational savings in terms of coarse graining degree and presenting recent applications and future directions in the field.
