Ultrathin samarium-doped palladium nanocrystals with exotic shapes for efficient electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation

Gongguo Zhang et al.

Summary: We report the fabrication of PdSm bimetallic nanocrystals with controlled shapes and explore their applications as the electrocatalysts for electroxidation of ethanol (EOR) in alkaline medium. The success of current synthesis relies on the co-reduction of Pd(acac)2 and Sm(acac)3 in the presence of N-oleyl-1,3-propanediamine (OPDA) and Mo(CO)6 at an elevated temperature. For the first time, ultrathin nanostructures composed of Pd-rare earth metal bimetals could be prepared in high purity, in the form of ultrathin porous nanosheets and concave tetrahedra, together with the size/edge length limited to sub-3 nm size range.

Study of the anticorrosive behavior of samarium as a corrosion inhibitor in multilayer systems for aluminum alloy

Jose Antonio Cabello Mendez et al.

Summary: This study presents a multilayer system for protecting aluminum alloy AA3003 using samarium compounds as a corrosion inhibitor and a continuous SiO2 layer. The new coating method eliminates the need for vacuum chambers, making it suitable for industrial production. The results show that the combination of samarium compound deposition by atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) and silica deposition provides effective corrosion protection. XPS analysis indicates that the APPJ method increases the concentration of Sm(OH)3, which contributes to the protective behavior. The findings also highlight the optimal processing times for the immersion method and APPJ method.
