Summary: We report the fabrication of PdSm bimetallic nanocrystals with controlled shapes and explore their applications as the electrocatalysts for electroxidation of ethanol (EOR) in alkaline medium. The success of current synthesis relies on the co-reduction of Pd(acac)2 and Sm(acac)3 in the presence of N-oleyl-1,3-propanediamine (OPDA) and Mo(CO)6 at an elevated temperature. For the first time, ultrathin nanostructures composed of Pd-rare earth metal bimetals could be prepared in high purity, in the form of ultrathin porous nanosheets and concave tetrahedra, together with the size/edge length limited to sub-3 nm size range.

Summary: This study presents a multilayer system for protecting aluminum alloy AA3003 using samarium compounds as a corrosion inhibitor and a continuous SiO2 layer. The new coating method eliminates the need for vacuum chambers, making it suitable for industrial production. The results show that the combination of samarium compound deposition by atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) and silica deposition provides effective corrosion protection. XPS analysis indicates that the APPJ method increases the concentration of Sm(OH)3, which contributes to the protective behavior. The findings also highlight the optimal processing times for the immersion method and APPJ method.

Summary: Different strontium borate compounds codoped with divalent europium and samarium ions were synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction method. Optimization of the material was achieved by varying the experimental procedure and the molar ratios of boron and codopants. The optimized material, strontium hexaborate doped with a relatively high europium concentration and a low samarium concentration, exhibited broad excitation range and strong and narrow emission, making it suitable for solar energy generation applications.

Summary: Designing a highly efficient and stable electrode is crucial for photoelectrochemical water splitting. This study developed a unique ZnO1-x/3D-Al composite photoanode for efficient water splitting. The 3D-Al nanostructure improves light absorption while the presence of oxygen vacancies facilitates charge separation in ZnO1-x. The integrated ZnO1-x/3D-Al photoanode shows an enhanced photocurrent density due to the synergy effect between plasmon resonance and oxygen vacancies.

Summary: Activation of lattice oxygen species in oxides is important for enhancing catalytic oxidation activity. In this study, the lattice distortion of Mn3O4 spinel oxide was tuned by interfacing with amorphous samarium oxides, leading to the activation of lattice oxygen. The optimized catalyst, Sm0.3Mn, exhibited improved intrinsic activity for CO oxidation, as well as enhanced water resistance and SO2 tolerance compared to pristine Mn3O4. The rational modulation of reactive oxygen species in the lattice-distorted Mn3O4 contributed to the improved performance.

Summary: This study investigates the potential toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and samarium-doped ZnO NPs (Sm/ZnO NPs) on the green microalga Chlorella vulgaris. The results show that both ZnO and Sm/ZnO NPs induce concentration-dependent cytotoxicity, including reduced cell growth, decreased photosynthetic pigment contents, and deformation in the cellular morphology. Sm-doping plays a significant role in enhancing the toxicity of ZnO NPs on C. vulgaris cells.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation on the effects of surface polarity on the structure and ferromagnetic properties of Co and Co-Sm co-implanted polar ZnO films. The results show that O-polar ZnO exhibits stronger ferromagnetism, possibly due to the combination of more oxygen vacancies and larger local moments related to Co and Sm doping.

Summary: Electrochemical membrane filtration can enhance the degradation or rejection of water contaminants through anodic oxidation or cathodic repulsion. However, electrochemical membranes and electrocatalysts often face challenges such as corrosion or passivation, as well as the formation of toxic byproducts. This study investigated the aging processes of two conductive membranes and found that under certain conditions, chloride or bromide can be oxidized to bromate or chlorate. Characterizing membrane aging and the formation of toxic byproducts is essential for the safe and rational design of electrochemical reactive membrane processes.

Summary: The undoped ZnO and Sm-substituted ZnO nanomaterials synthesized by co-precipitation route were characterized using various techniques. The results show that the samples have a wurtzite structure similar to ZnO, with observed fluctuating lattice parameters and a new cubic phase of Sm2O3 for higher dopant levels. TEM images reveal different shapes of nanoparticles. Absorption spectra analysis indicates a decrease in bandgap energy for Sm-substituted ZnO samples. X-ray absorption edge measurements confirm the introduction of oxygen vacancies with Sm substitution and verify the valence states of Sm cations and Zn ions.
