In Situ Synthesis of Cation-Free Zirconia-Supported Zeolite CHA Membranes for Efficient CO2/CH4 Separation

Nana Wang et al.

Summary: Cation-free zirconosilicate zeolite CHA and thin zirconia-supported membranes were synthesized in situ in a fluoride-free gel for the first time. The use of a ZrO2/Al2O3 composite support prevented the transportation of aluminum from the support into the zeolite membranes. The cation-free zeolite CHA membranes were synthesized without the use of a fluorite source, demonstrating the green nature of the synthesis. The membrane thickness was only 1.0 μm. The best cation-free zeolite CHA membrane prepared by the green in situ synthesis exhibited a high CO2 permeance of 1.1 x 10-6 mol/(m2 s Pa) and a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 79 at 298 K and 0.2 MPa pressure drop for an equimolar CO2/CH4 mixture.

Mass transport of CO2 over CH4 controlled by the selective surface barrier in ultra-thin CHA membranes

Mojtaba Sinaei Nobandegani et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the adsorption and mass transport of CO2 and CH4 in CHA zeolite. Large and well-defined CHA crystals were prepared for adsorption studies, and adsorption isotherms were measured to estimate adsorption parameters. Permeation experiments with a defect-free CHA membrane also showed high selectivity for CO2 and CH4 under specific conditions.

The origin of the surface barrier in nanoporous materials

Jonas Hedlund et al.

Summary: The study found that surface barriers in MFI and CHA membranes may be a surface diffusion process with higher activation energy, with other possible mechanisms not ruled out. For pure components at low concentration in MFI zeolite, the barrier is proportional to the product of the molecular weight and heat of desorption; while at high concentration, the barriers of the components become more similar due to interaction effects.

A super-permeable and highly-oriented SAPO-34 thin membrane prepared by a green gel-less method using high-aspect-ratio nanosheets for efficient CO2 capture

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, tubular and preferentially oriented CHA-type SAPO-34 membranes were prepared by a gel-less method with few liquid wastes. These membranes exhibited good reproducibility and high efficiency. The presence of perpendicular, ordered, and short nanochannels in the SAPO-34 membrane facilitated fast CO2 permeation. The highly-oriented SAPO-34 membrane showed high CO2 permeances and selectivities, making it attractive for highly efficient CO2 capture.

Scalable fabrication of highly selective SSZ-13 membranes on 19-channel monolithic supports for efficient CO2 capture

Junjing Zhou et al.

Summary: This article describes a one-step secondary growth method using concentrated gel and vacuum seeding to prepare zeolite CHA (SSZ-13) membranes with high CO2/N2 selectivities on 19-channel monolithic supports. The membranes show improved packing density and mechanical strength compared to normal tubular and disc membranes. The synthesis procedure is scalable and large-area monolithic SSZ-13 membrane elements with high selectivities were fabricated. Temperature and pressure drop were found to affect the separation performance of the membranes. The membranes are promising for CO2 capture from natural gas and flue gas.

Gas Permeation Properties of High-Silica CHA-Type Zeolite Membrane

Yasuhisa Hasegawa et al.

Summary: In this study, a polycrystalline CHA-type zeolite layer with Si/Al = 18 was successfully formed on a porous alpha-Al2O3 tube, and the gas permeation properties were determined for various gases at different temperatures. The membrane exhibited selective permeation behavior based on molecular size, with high selectivities observed for N-2/SF6 and CO2/CH4. However, the CO2/N-2 selectivity was relatively low. These results suggest that the high-silica CHA-type zeolite membrane has potential for separating CO2 from CH4 through molecular sieving.

High-performance 7-channel monolith supported SSZ-13 membranes for high-pressure CO2/CH4 separations

Yanmei Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized continuous SSZ-13 zeolite membranes on the inner surface of monolith supports for the first time, with higher packing density and mechanical strength. Inserting spacers was an effective way to reduce the negative impact of concentration polarization and improve separation performance of the membranes. Adding spacers significantly increased carbon dioxide permeance and CO2/CH4 selectivity under the same feed flow rate.

SSZ-13 zeolite membranes on four-channel α-Al2O3 hollow fibers for CO2 separation

Hua Liu et al.

Summary: High-silica CHA (SSZ-13) zeolite membranes show great potential for CO2 separation, but practical application is limited by high investment costs. In this study, SSZ-13 zeolite membranes were successfully synthesized on hollow fibers with different pore sizes, achieving good CO2/CH4 selectivity and CO2 permeance on membranes with 150 nm pores. Evaluation of gas permeation found that small molecules mainly pass through zeolitic pores, while larger molecules are more sensitive to non-zeolitic pores.
