Rapid separation of bacteria from primary nasal samples using inertial microfluidics

Jesus Shrestha et al.

Summary: Microbial populations play a crucial role in human health and disease development. The explosive proliferation of opportunistic bacteria in the nasal cavity often leads to diseases. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistant opportunistic pathogens highlights the importance of studying nasal microbiota and bacterial diversity in understanding pathogenesis and developing microbial-based therapies. However, existing methods for isolating and analyzing these populations in a clinical study are limited, making it challenging to identify and profile potentially harmful bacteria. In this study, a novel microfluidic zigzag channel is proposed for enhanced isolation and detection of bacteria from human clinical nasal swabs, offering a simple, robust, rapid, and cost-effective method for rapid identification of bacterial cell populations from clinical samples.

Sajad Razavi Bazaz et al.

Summary: Separation and enrichment of target cells using inertial microfluidics, specifically the zigzag microchannel (Z-RISE), shows improved focusing and separation performance compared to other curvilinear or serpentine microchannels. The rigidity of the microchannel significantly affects the focusing performance, and the sudden channel cross-section expansion at the corners enhances the separation and purity efficiency. Z-RISE demonstrates great potential for applications involving particle and cell manipulations, providing outstanding particle or cell concentration efficiency.
