A novel P/Ni-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets for improving mechanical, thermal and flame-retardant properties of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene resin

Jiahao Ren et al.

Summary: The widespread use of highly flammable ABS resin poses a great fire threat to humans and the environment. However, current flame retardants often sacrifice mechanical and thermal properties while improving flame retardancy. In this study, a novel phosphorus and nickel co-doped graphitic carbon nitride nanoflakes were developed to address this trade-off. The addition of the new material significantly improved the thermal and mechanical properties of ABS composite, resulting in excellent anti-ignition, flame-retardant, and smoke-suppressive performances. This research provides a new design strategy for fabricating fire-safe polymer composites with superior properties.

Metal-Organic Framework as an Efficient Synergist for Intumescent Flame Retardants against Highly Flammable Polypropylene

Ruiqing Shen et al.

Summary: This study incorporates zeolite imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8), a type of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), into an intumescent flame retardant (IFR)/polypropylene (PP) composite system to improve flame retardant efficiency and reduce smoke emission. The results demonstrate a synergistic effect between ZIF-8 and IFR additives, leading to the formation of a more stable intumescent char layer and preventing extensive burning of PP. Addition of only 2 wt% ZIF-8 significantly increases the limiting oxygen index value and achieves a UL-94 V-0 rating, while reducing heat release rate and fire spread tendencies. It is suggested that the presence of ZIF-8 inhibits carbonaceous microdomain growth during combustion, enabling the formation of more compact char layers and enhancing flame retardant efficiency.

Small multiamine molecule enabled fire-retardant polymeric materials with enhanced strength, toughness, and self-healing properties

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: The combination of high fire retardancy, high strength, and great toughness, as well as good healability, is crucial for the successful applications of polymeric materials. Inspired by the nano confinement effect of spider silk, a multifunctional small molecule, HCPA, is designed to serve as a fire retardant and hydrogen-bond crosslinker for PVA. Adding 5.0 wt% of HCPA enables PVA to achieve self-extinguishment, high tensile strength, and toughness, with over 90% healing efficiency.

Induced assembly of polystyrene composites for simultaneously improving flame retardant and electromagnetic shielding properties

Caiqin Gao et al.

Summary: Polystyrene/silicon wrapped ammonium polyphosphate/reduced graphene oxide composites were prepared using filtration induced assembly and hot-pressing, showing satisfactory flame retardant and electromagnetic interference shielding properties. The introduction of SiAPP and rGO enhanced the thermal and fire-safe performances of PS composites, while also reducing heat release peak and improving EMI shielding performance. The combination of SiAPP and rGO promoted the formation of compact char residues and enhanced EMI shielding through multiple reflectance and absorption mechanisms.
