National models of climate governance among major emitters

Johnathan Guy et al.

Summary: National climate institutions play a crucial role in climate mitigation policymaking and have a significant impact on climate policy ambition and performance. This study compares climate institutions across 21 major emitters, identifying four different models of climate governance. The analysis shows that Climate Technocracies and Developmentalists tend to have higher policy ambition and performance compared to Carbon Fragmentists and Centralists. The relative ambition of these national models is influenced by certain macro-institutional and macro-economic factors, suggesting potential for investment in national climate institutions to strengthen climate policy capacity.

Diagnosing destabilization risk in global land carbon sinks

Marcos Fernandez-Martinez et al.

Summary: Global net land carbon uptake or net biome production (NBP) has increased during recent decades. Here, researchers investigated the trends and controls of net terrestrial carbon uptake and its temporal variability and autocorrelation from 1981 to 2018. They found that annual NBP and its interdecadal variability increased globally, while temporal autocorrelation decreased. Climate change, especially increasing temperature and its variability, appeared to be the most important drivers of declining and increasingly variable NBP.

Long-Lived Internal Charge-Separated State in Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks Improving Photocatalytic Performance

Yejun Xiao et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great attention for their improved photocatalytic performance compared to bulk counterparts. However, the photocatalytic mechanism of 2D MOFs, particularly in terms of charge separation and extraction dynamics, is still unclear. In this study, transient absorption spectroscopy was used to systematically investigate the photoinduced carrier dynamics of a bulk manganese-based MOF and its exfoliated 2D nanosheets. The results reveal an important dynamic mechanism for the photocatalytic activity in 2D MOFs, providing new guidance for the rational design of efficient 2D MOF photocatalysts.

A selective Au-ZnO/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst for oxidative coupling of methane to ethane with dioxygen

Shuang Song et al.

Summary: The study presents a highly efficient and selective photo-oxidation method for the direct conversion of methane to ethane using a Au nanoparticle (NP) loaded ZnO/TiO2 hybrid. This method achieves an ethane production rate of over 5,000 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with 90% selectivity, which is more than an order of magnitude higher than current state-of-the-art photocatalytic systems. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the formation of heterojunctions between ZnO and TiO2, while the Au cocatalyst facilitates C2H6 formation and inhibits overoxidation of CH4 to CO2.
