A review of recent developments in application of low cost natural materials in purification and upgrade of biogas

Elshaday Mulu et al.

Summary: The main contaminants in biogas limit its application by reducing energy density and causing corrosion. Upgrading biogas using natural materials is a cost-effective solution, with potential for enhancing adsorption capacity and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Future studies should focus on methane loss and cost-effectiveness of natural materials compared to commercial processes.

Biogas upgrading by adsorption onto activated carbon and carbon molecular sieves: Experimental and modelling study in binary CO2/CH4 mixture

Fabrizio Rainone et al.

Summary: Biomethane production through biogas upgrading using commercial carbonaceous adsorbents was experimentally investigated in this study. It was found that activated carbon (AC) exhibited higher adsorption capacity and better kinetic performance, while carbon molecular sieves (CMSs) showed higher selectivity for CO2/CH4 separation and faster kinetics, with Xintao sample showing the best overall performance. Modeling of breakthrough curves indicated intraparticle diffusion as the rate-limiting step for CO2 adsorption.
