Insight into the dual effect of water on lignin dissolution in ionic liquids

Mengmeng Ge et al.

Summary: The dual regulation of water on lignin in ionic liquids was studied using molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results showed that a small amount of water enhanced the dissolution of lignin in ionic liquids, while excess water reduced the dissolution ability. This study provides insights for the design of efficient and cost-effective biomass pretreatment using ionic liquid-water systems.

Ionic liquid dissolution utilized for biomass conversion into biofuels, value-added chemicals and advanced materials: A comprehensive review

Jherwin B. Ocreto et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic and algal biomass are abundant and cost-effective renewable resources for biofuels, value-added chemicals, and advanced materials. However, the difficulty in converting them into valuable compounds is a major challenge. Ionic liquids have shown promise in decomposing these biomass feedstocks and offer a green alternative to volatile organic solvents. This paper comprehensively reviews the conversion capabilities, properties, and operating parameters of different types of ionic liquids, as well as the methods for dissolving biomass components. Challenges in utilizing ionic liquids for biomass pretreatment and processing on a commercial scale are highlighted.

The microscopic structure of 1-Methoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EOMIMTFSI) during dilution with polar solvents

Hong Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrogen bonding interactions between ether-functionalized IL and co-solvents at different concentrations using FTIR, excess infrared spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. It was found that the strength of hydrogen bonds increased during dilution with co-solvents, with the EOMIMTFSI-DMSO system exhibiting the strongest interactions. The main interaction sites and types varied among the studied systems, providing insights into the microscopic properties of ether-functionalized ILs.

Effective Biomass Fractionation through Oxygen-Enhanced Alkaline-Oxidative Pretreatment

Zhaoyang Yuan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using both oxygen and hydrogen peroxide as co-oxidants during alkaline-oxidative pretreatment can significantly improve biomass fractionation and increase enzymatic digestibility. The addition of O-2 has a significant impact on delignification, while the presence of hydrogen peroxide is equally crucial.

Ionic liquid-assisted bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass for the development of value-added products

Elahe Amini et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass is a major source for biofuels and bioproducts, but the recalcitrance of the lignin-carbohydrate complex poses challenges for efficient conversion. Ionic liquids have been effective solvents in deconstructing the biomass, offering green alternatives to traditional volatile organic solvents and potentially increasing productivity. Research into the use of ionic liquids is expected to lead to significant industrial progress in biomass pretreatment and processing.

Synthesis, structure-properties relationship and biodegradability assessment of novel protic ionic liquids

Dimitrios Skarpalezos et al.

Summary: This study presents the design, synthesis, and biodegradability assessment of 14 protic ionic liquids (PILs), with nine of them being newly introduced in the bibliography. The physicochemical properties, thermal behavior, and viscosity of two important PILs were studied, along with the discussion on how the structural features of PILs ions impact these properties.

Solvent behavior of an ionic liquid set around a cellulose Iβ crystallite model through molecular dynamics simulations

Joel A. Sanchez-Badillo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the solvent behavior of a set of imidazolium-based ionic liquids around a crystallite model of cellulose I beta through molecular dynamics simulations. Results showed that the ionic liquids can disrupt the external chains of the cellulose crystallite and affect its properties such as density and vaporization enthalpy, contributing to cellulose preconditioning. Solvation free energy calculations for the cellulose chain revealed a specific trend among the different ionic liquids in their capacity for cellulose preconditioning.
