Advances in the understanding of disease mechanisms of autoimmune neuromuscular junction disorders

Maartje G. Huijbers et al.

Summary: Immunosuppressive treatments for autoimmune neuromuscular junction disorders are available, but a cure has not yet been found. Recent advances in understanding the structure and function of the neuromuscular junction have provided insight into the pathophysiology of these diseases and laid the foundation for the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Epidemiology, diagnostics, and biomarkers of autoimmune neuromuscular junction disorders

Anna Rostedt Punga et al.

Summary: Autoimmune neuromuscular junction disorders are rare, with myasthenia gravis being increasingly recognized in older individuals. Various diagnostic methods, such as serological antibody, electrophysiological, imaging, and pharmacological tests, are available for these disorders. Determining if the disease is paraneoplastic is important for prognosis. However, objective biomarkers are needed to predict the disease course of myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome.

Ectopic germinal centers in the thymus accurately predict prognosis of myasthenia gravis after thymectomy

Joona Sarkkinen et al.

Summary: This study used digital pathology to explore the predictive ability of thymic histopathology in non-thymomatous myasthenia gravis (NTMG). The results showed differences in thymic histology between early-onset MG (EOMG) and late-onset MG (LOMG), and the impact of thymic changes on thymectomy outcomes. The number of ectopic germinal centers (eGC) was found to be a valuable predictor for post-thymectomy outcomes in EOMG patients.

Identification of genetic risk loci and prioritization of genes and pathways for myasthenia gravis: a genome-wide association study

Ruth Chia et al.

Summary: This study identified genetic risk loci associated with myasthenia gravis through a genome-wide association study and demonstrated different genetic risk factors between early-onset and late-onset cases. Genetic correlation analysis also revealed a genetic link between myasthenia gravis and other autoimmune diseases.

Distinct roles of ICOS and CD40L in human T-B cell adhesion and antibody production

Zhicui Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the diverse roles of CD40-CD40L and ICOS-ICOSL in cell adhesion and IgG/IgM production during CD4+ T-B cell interactions, with ICOS-ICOSL ligation more likely to be engaged in cell adhesion while CD40-CD40L provides indispensable signal for B cell differentiation and IgG/IgM production. This information might be helpful for understanding the pathogenesis of SLE.

Serum free light chain reference intervals in an Optilite and their influence on clinical guidelines

Luis J. Morales-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study established new reference intervals and diagnostic ranges for free light chain analysis on the Optilite turbidimeter, showing significant differences from the existing guidelines. Validation with samples of polyclonal hypo- and hypergammaglobulinemia confirmed the new diagnostic range's efficacy as a monoclonal proliferation index.

Roles of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) in cancer

Hai-Yang Liao et al.

Summary: MMP-7 is a crucial proteolytic enzyme involved in regulating various human pathophysiological processes, especially in the occurrence and development of cancers. It could serve as a potential tumor biomarker and therapeutic target, providing new diagnostic and prognostic considerations for cancer patients.

Effects of thymectomy on late-onset non-thymomatous myasthenia gravis: systematic review and meta-analysis

Jinwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Late-onset non-thymomatous myasthenia gravis (NTMG) patients have a lower likelihood of achieving clinical stable remission after thymectomy compared to early-onset patients. Thymectomy in late-onset NTMG does not show any benefits in terms of clinical stable remission/pharmacological remission when compared to conservative treatments. Further research is needed to determine the appropriate therapeutic strategies for late-onset NTMG patients.
