Order and information in the patterns of spinning magnetic micro-disks at the air-water interface

Wendong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between information, structure, and interactions by using self-organizing spinning magnetic micro-disks as a model experimental system. The findings demonstrate a direct link between information and structure, and establish the Shannon entropy by neighbor distances as a powerful observable for characterizing structural changes. These findings are important for analyzing natural self-organizing systems and designing collective robots.

On-demand ferrofluid droplet formation with non-linear magnetic permeability in the presence of high non-uniform magnetic fields

Mohamad Ali Bijarchi et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamics of ferrofluid droplet generation under a non-uniform magnetic field was investigated using multiscale numerical modeling. The results showed that the magnetic, gravitational, and surface tension forces have a significant impact on droplet formation.

Ferrofluid droplet breakup process and neck evolution under steady and pulse-width modulated magnetic fields

Mohamad Ali Bijarchi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the neck evolution during the formation of a ferrofluid droplet under different types of magnetic fields, steady and Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM), and observes self-similar behavior in the vicinity of the detachment moment. A scaling law is fitted to the variation of minimum neck diameter versus remaining time to the breakup. Additionally, a new pattern of minimum neck diameter variation with remaining time to the breakup is observed for the first time under PWM magnetic field, with the trend of variation divided into slow-going and fast-going necking regions.

Ferrofluidic Manipulator: Automatic Manipulation of Nonmagnetic Microparticles at the Air-Ferrofluid Interface

Zoran Cenev et al.

Summary: The study introduces a ferrofluidic manipulator for automatic 2-D manipulation of nonmagnetic objects floating on a ferrofluid. By deforming the air-ferrofluid interface, nonmagnetic particles can be controlled with high precision, enabling manipulation of various materials and shapes successfully. This promising approach demonstrates the potential for manipulation of living and nonliving matter at the air-liquid interface.

Motion and trapping of micro- and millimeter-sized particles on the air-paramagnetic-liquid interface

Zoran Cenev et al.

Summary: The motion of particles on an air-paramagnetic-liquid interface is not only governed by magnetic energy, but also influenced by the curvature of the interface deformation, gravitational potential, and the magnetic energy from the particles and the liquid.
