Advantages of Bilinear Koopman Realizations for the Modeling and Control of Systems With Unknown Dynamics

Daniel Bruder et al.

Summary: This letter describes how the Koopman operator can be used to generate approximate linear, bilinear, and nonlinear model realizations from data. It argues in favor of bilinear realizations for characterizing systems with unknown dynamics, showing every control-affine system admits an infinite-dimensional bilinear realization, but not necessarily a linear one. The advantages of bilinear Koopman realizations for control are demonstrated through simulated robot arm model predictive control framework.

Data-Driven Control of Soft Robots Using Koopman Operator Theory

Daniel Bruder et al.

Summary: Controlling soft robots with precision is challenging, but Koopman operator theory offers a data-driven approach to construct explicit dynamical models for better control. By applying the Koopman-based method, three MPC controllers for a pneumatic soft robot arm were developed and showed to be over three times more accurate than a benchmark controller based on a linear state-space model.

Soft robotic manipulator for intraoperative MRI-guided transoral laser microsurgery

Ge Fang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an MR-safe soft robotic system for MRI-guided transoral laser microsurgery, featuring a miniature size, inherent compliance, and five degrees of freedom for safe and dexterous operation within confined oral and pharyngeal cavities. A learning-based controller accommodates the inherent nonlinear robot actuation, validated with laser path-following tests and demonstrating submillimeter laser steering accuracy. MRI compatibility testing showed zero observable image artifacts during robot operation, enabling ex vivo tissue ablation and a cadaveric head-and-neck trial with MR thermometry monitoring.

Large-Scale Surface Shape Sensing with Learning-Based Computational Mechanics

Kui Wang et al.

Summary: Proprioception enables organisms to interact safely and accurately with their environment and each other by perceiving their own configuration and movement in space. A novel flexible sensor framework incorporating computational mechanics and machine learning is proposed to achieve robots with similar perceptive capability. This framework utilizes finite element analysis and ensemble learning to enable real-time, robust, and high-order surface reconstruction, demonstrating enhanced sensing performance in accuracy, repeatability, and feasibility on a large-scale sensor.
