Impacts of Current Limiting on the Transient Stability of the Virtual Synchronous Generator

Kourosh Gharouni Saffar et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impacts of different current limiting strategies on the transient stability of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG). The power-angle curve of the VSG under different operating conditions is theoretically characterized in detail and experimentally verified. It is shown that the reference current saturation approaches reshapes the VSG power-angle curve in different ways. The resulting impacts on the VSG transient stability are comprehensively investigated through time-domain simulation of a battery energy storage system.

Equivalent Circuit Model of Grid-Forming Converters With Circular Current Limiter for Transient Stability Analysis

Bo Fan et al.

Summary: This letter presents an equivalent circuit model for a grid-forming converter with a circular current limiter and investigates its transient stability. It is found that the inner control loop can be simplified as a voltage source behind an equivalent resistor. Theoretical analysis and experimental tests based on the proposed model demonstrate that the transient stability of a P - f droop-controlled grid-forming converter with the circular current limiter can be guaranteed when stable equilibrium points exist.

Transient Stability of Single-Loop Voltage-Magnitude Controlled Grid-Forming Converters

Teng Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the transient stability of grid-forming converters with single-loop voltage-magnitude control scheme. It found that the choice of voltage-magnitude controller critically impacts transient stability, different from vector-voltage control GFM converters where stability is mainly affected by outer power control loops. Experimental tests confirmed the theoretical findings.
