Data-Driven Diagnosis of Multiple Faults in Series Battery Packs Based on Cross-Cell Voltage Correlation and Feature Principal Components

Jiale Xie et al.

Summary: This article presents an efficient fault diagnostic scheme for battery packs, utilizing a novel sensor topology and signal processing procedure. Cross-cell voltages are measured to detect electrical abnormalities, and recursive correlation coefficients are calculated to represent system state. Discrete wavelet packet transform is applied to extract diverse characteristic indexes, and principal component analysis is used to refine the most representative fault features. Multiclass relevance vector machine is employed to construct sparse classification models for fault pattern recognition and evaluation of fault types and grades. Experimental verifications demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves accurate and reliable assessments of different fault specifics, with an 84% success rate in fault isolation and a 90% success rate in fault severity grading.

Fault isolating and grading for li-ion battery packs based on pseudo images and convolutional neural network

Jiale Xie et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel diagnostic framework for faults in series battery packs using signal imaging and convolutional neural network techniques. It quantifies the voltage synchronicity between adjacent cells with high sensitivity to detect system anomalies. By converting the correlation coefficient series into pseudo images using GAF and MTF transformations, informative details about system state are extracted. CNN models are then used to analyze the images and accurately detect fault occurrence, infer fault type, and evaluate fault grade. Experimental results show high accuracy rates for fault type isolation and severity grading using the proposed framework.

Voltage Correlation-Based Principal Component Analysis Method for Short Circuit Fault Diagnosis of Series Battery Pack

Guang Wang et al.

Summary: This article proposes a data-driven fault diagnosis method for series lithium-ion battery pack using a voltage correlation-based statistical analysis method. The method measures the voltage of each cell independently and calculates the correlation coefficient (CC) between adjacent cells. A principal component analysis model is trained using CC signals under normal conditions, and synthetic statistic and kernel density estimation-based thresholds are designed to monitor all CC signals simultaneously. Once a fault is detected, an accumulative relative contribution plot algorithm is used to locate the faulty cell. Experimental results show that the new method performs better than state-of-the-art CC methods in terms of processing capability, sensitivity, and robustness.
