Quantifying the Contribution of Dynamic Reactive Power Compensators on System Strength at LCC-HVdc Converter Terminals

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces improved indices, specifically the AISCR, to assess the impact of reactive power compensators on HVdc converter performance, since the traditional ESCR index cannot be directly applied when power-electronics based converters are used for reactive power support. The AISCR index is evaluated by comparing a system with the compensator to one without, but with equivalent performance. Additionally, the paper addresses the use of two types of compensators - the Synchronous Compensator and the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) - and suggests modifications to the AISCR index for different HVdc phenomena.

A Novel Hybrid Line Commutated Converter Based on IGCT to Mitigate Commutation Failure for High-Power HVdc Application

Chaoqun Xu et al.

Summary: In this letter, a new hybrid LCC based on IGCT is proposed to effectively reduce the commutation failure probability of the line commutated converter (LCC) based high-voltage direct current transmission system. By replacing some thyristors with IGCTs, the reverse blocking IGCT can withstand bidirectional voltages and actively turn off fault currents, further interrupting the commutation failure process. Experimental results verify the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed scheme.

Interaction Mechanism and Coordinated Control of Commutation Failure Prevention in Multi-Infeed Ultra-HVDC System

Wei Yao et al.

Summary: CFPREV control is an effective method to mitigate commutation failure in high-voltage DC systems. However, in a multi-infeed system, CFPREV control may cause concurrent commutation failures in remote inverters. To address this issue, a coordinated control scheme is proposed, which allows CFPREV control to adaptively adjust according to the commutation margins of remote inverters.

A Dynamic Series Voltage Compensator for the Mitigation of LCC-HVDC Commutation Failure

Lingxi Hou et al.

Summary: The dynamic series voltage compensator (DSVC) is proposed to effectively mitigate the commutation failure (CF) of the line-commutated converter high-voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) transmission system. It consists of three IGCT-based FBSM chains to match the bulk power transmission of the LCC-HVDC, and its operation and control strategies enable quick response and safe operation. The DSVC shows better performance than existing topologies in handling emergencies and stresses beyond its capability, ensuring its feasibility and practicability.

Reactive Power Control Strategy for Inhibiting Transient Overvoltage Caused by Commutation Failure

Chunya Yin et al.

Summary: This paper investigates transient overvoltage issues caused by commutation failure (CF) in LCC-HVDC systems, and proposes constant reactive power control (CRPC) to suppress transient overvoltage. By controlling the reactive power consumed by the rectifier, the exchange of reactive power can be reduced, thus inhibiting transient overvoltage occurrences.
