Reducing the Computational Complexity of Wide-Area Backup Protection in Power Systems

Mohammad Rezaei Jegarluei et al.

Summary: This letter proposes a technique to reduce the computational complexity of wide-area backup protection (WABP) methods using sparse PMU measurements. The technique allows the system of equations for each candidate line to be obtained directly from the bus impedance matrix of the pre-fault power system, eliminating the need for multiple distinct bus impedance matrices. The proposed technique's applicability and effectiveness are verified through extensive simulations on the IEEE 39-bus test system.

A Generalized Closed-From Solution for Wide-Area Fault Location by Characterizing the Distributions of Superimposed Errors

Mohammad Rezaei Jegarluei et al.

Summary: Wide-area fault location (WAFL) is a method that estimates the fault distance on the faulted line using PMU data. This study formulates a system of linear equations and utilizes the advantages of both voltage and current synchrophasors to obtain a generalized solution. The rigorous derivation of equation weights based on the statistical distributions of the superimposed errors and extensive simulations and comparison studies demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of this method.
