Performance of Cooperative Communication System With Multiple Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Over Nakagami-m Fading Channels

Van-Duc Phan et al.

Summary: This paper explores the advantages of multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in wireless systems, specifically in a cooperative communication system combining reflecting links from RISs and a direct link. The performance of the cooperative RIS-D system is analyzed over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels, and it is found that the cooperative RIS-D system has a significantly lower symbol error probability (SEP) compared to a single-input single-output (SISO) system. Furthermore, increasing the number of RISs or the number of reflecting elements in the RISs can greatly reduce the SEP of the cooperative RIS-D system.

Cooperative Beam Routing for Multi-IRS Aided Communication

Weidong Mei et al.

Summary: Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is considered as a revolutionary technology for achieving smart and reconfigurable wireless communication environments. In this study, a new IRS-aided communication system is proposed, where multiple IRSs assist in establishing multi-hop signal reflection between a multi-antenna base station and a single-antenna user. By maximizing the received signal power at the user, the optimal active and cooperative passive beamforming solutions for a given beam route are provided, revealing a trade-off between passive beamforming gain and multi-reflection path loss in optimal beam routing design. The proposed algorithm shows significant performance gains over benchmark schemes in numerical results.
