H.264 Video Encoding-based Edge-assisted Mobile AR Systems: Network and Energy Issues

Anik Mallik et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive study on Edge-MAR systems using H.264 video encoding, focusing on network condition, resource utilization, detection accuracy, and energy consumption of various mobile devices. The study collects data on latency, energy, transmitted data size, and accuracy for each segment of an object detection pipeline through experiments, and analyzes the nonlinear behaviors of Edge-MAR. Challenges associated with testing the system and ways to overcome them are also demonstrated. Regression-based models are proposed to analytically compute different Edge-MAR parameters for desired outcomes. This extensive study provides essential guidelines for designing network- and energy-aware H.264 video encoding-based Edge-MAR systems.
