The in situ approach to model identification and control design for pressure regulation in Water Distribution Networks: An in silico evaluation

Giacomo Galuppini et al.

Summary: This study explores service pressure regulation in water distribution networks and proposes a model identification approach based on spectral analysis. The identified models are used for evaluating the closed-loop performance of the overall control methodology. The results show that the proposed method can be effectively applied in real scenarios, improving the safety, reliability, and effectiveness of pressure control.

Constrained Nonlinear Output Regulation Using Model Predictive Control

Johannes Koehler et al.

Summary: We propose a model predictive control framework that solves the constrained nonlinear output regulation problem without relying on classical regulator equations or offline design procedures. By minimizing predicted output error, we develop a formulation applicable to strictly feasible constrained nonlinear regulation problems. For minimum phase systems, this design ensures exponential stability of the regulator manifold. We also provide a design procedure for handling unstable zero dynamics.

Bottom-Up Generation of Peak Demand Scenarios in Water Distribution Networks

Enrico Creaco et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a two-step methodology for stochastic generation of snapshot peak demand scenarios in water distribution networks, using a beta probabilistic model to describe hourly demands. The application to user demand data from Soccavo, Naples showed the effectiveness and robustness of the methodology for various numbers and sizes of users.

Effects of Sampling on Stability and Performance of Electronically Controlled Pressure-Reducing Valves

Tomasz Janus et al.

Summary: This paper examines how increasing the sampling period in pressure control can deteriorate system performance and cause instability. Through examples of a closed-loop inertial system and an electronically controlled pressure-reducing valve coupled with a water distribution network model, it demonstrates how system stability depends on sampling period and gain. Practical recommendations for sampling time selection are provided based on simulation results and engineering rules of thumb.

Sum-of-delay models for pressure control in Water Distribution Networks

Giacomo Galuppini et al.

Summary: Service pressure control is a powerful tool to reduce leakage and pipe burst risk in Water Distribution Networks (WDNs). To achieve good control performance, relying on a good model of the plant is essential. Previous studies have shown that using a grey-box model structure with pure delays can provide a physical justification for the complex dynamic behavior of WDNs. The potential of model identification and regulator design phases was demonstrated through simulated experiments on three different WDNs with detailed unsteady flow models.
