Design and construction of a portable e-nose system for human exhaled breath VOC analysis

V. A. Binson et al.

Summary: This paper describes the design and fabrication of a system that can analyze the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human exhaled breath. The system, including an electronic nose with metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors, control circuit, and processing circuit, has been tested and verified for detecting breath VOCs. A small pilot study involving lung cancer patients, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, asthma patients, and healthy controls was conducted to check the clinical feasibility of the system. The results demonstrate that the developed e-nose system, using TGS gas sensors, is cost-effective and non-invasive, and it will be a diagnostic tool for detecting lung cancer, COPD, and other major respiratory diseases in the near future.

Selective gas detection of H2 and CO by a single MOX-sensor

A. V. Shaposhnik et al.

Summary: This study explored the selective analysis of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and their mixtures in air using a SnO2-based metal oxide sensor with the addition of PdOx. By employing a single MOX sensor, quantitative and qualitative analysis of gases were conducted with a focus on a small number of training sample concentrations. The effect of air humidity on the accuracy of gas concentration determination was also investigated, and PCA regression analysis algorithms were used to reduce multidimensional data. Temperature modulation of the SnO2 sensor with PdOx led to a significant increase in sensor responses for gas concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 ppm compared to the stationary temperature regime.
