Additive manufacturing of flexible polymer-derived ceramic matrix composites

Jun Ou et al.

Summary: In this study, an ultraviolet light-curable preceramic polymer slurry was developed for digital light processing printing of flexible green parts in designed shapes. These parts were transformed into complex structures using an assisted secondary molding strategy, and the collapse of bulk pyrolyzed parts was avoided by impregnating their precursors with silicon nitride particles. The composites with 10 wt.% Si3N4 exhibited a bending strength of 130.61 +/- 16.01 MPa and a Vickers hardness of 6.43 +/- 0.12 GPa.

Rapid Printing of High-Temperature Polymer-Derived Ceramic Composite Thin-Film Thermistor with Laser Pyrolysis

Guicai Fang et al.

Summary: This work introduces a rapid and flexible method of using laser pyrolysis combined with direct ink writing process for printing double-layer high-temperature antioxidant polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) thin-film thermistors. The PDC composite antioxidant layer effectively prevents oxygen intrusion and exhibits high-temperature stability with a low resistance change. The electrical behavior of the thermistor is in agreement with the Mott's variable range hopping mechanism, and the feasibility of the thermistor on the surface of high-temperature components, such as an aeroengine blade, is demonstrated.

Summary: Preceramic polymer resins are ideal for 3D printing ceramic components, and the outcomes of the process strongly depend on parameters like catalyst concentration and cross-linking duration, affecting ceramic density and yield. Thermal analysis and FTIR are used to quantify these relationships and determine the best parameters for 3D printing PDC components, providing guidelines for future additive manufacturing of PDCs.

In Situ Laser Fabrication of Polymer-Derived Ceramic Composite Thin-Film Sensors for Harsh Environments

Lida Xu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel method of rapid in situ fabrication of polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) composite thin-film sensors by laser pyrolysis, which can quickly obtain a sensitive PDC composite film layer with high-quality graphite and is more flexible and efficient compared to traditional furnace thermolysis. The reaction differences between laser pyrolysis and furnace thermolysis are also analyzed. The approach pioneers the in situ laser fabrication of functional PDC films for sensors and shows great potential for in situ sensing of complex curved surfaces in harsh environments.
