IRS-Assisted Multicell Multiband Systems: Practical Reflection Model and Joint Beamforming Design

Wenhao Cai et al.

Summary: Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising and revolutionary technology that can tailor signal propagation environment in an energy/spectrum/hardware-efficient manner. However, most existing studies on IRS optimizations are based on an impractical reflection model, leading to performance loss in realistic wideband/multi-band systems. In this paper, a practical IRS reflection model is proposed, and joint transmit beamforming and IRS reflection beamforming design is investigated for an IRS-assisted multi-cell multi-band system. Various methods are used to solve power minimization and sum-rate maximization problems, resulting in significant performance improvement.

Delay-Phase Precoding for Wideband THz Massive MIMO

Linglong Dai et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the optimization problem of array gain in terahertz (THz) communication using massive MIMO and hybrid precoding technology. The authors propose a new precoding architecture called delay-phase precoding (DPP) to mitigate the beam split effect caused by the large bandwidth and large number of antennas in THz massive MIMO. The proposed DPP introduces a time delay network to realize frequency-dependent phase shifts, which can generate frequency-dependent beams towards the target direction across the entire bandwidth. Theoretical analysis and simulations show that the proposed DPP can effectively mitigate the beam split effect and achieve near-optimal rate with higher energy efficiency.
