Absorption and Scattering by a Temporally Switched Lossy Layer: Going beyond the Rozanov Bound

Chen Firestein et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the electromagnetic scattering, absorption, and performance bounds of short time modulated pulses on a time-varying lossy layer. Numerical simulations show that a time-varying absorbing layer with switching permittivity and conductance can absorb more power from modulated, ultrawideband, and quasimonochromatic pulsed waves than the time-invariant Rozanov bound. A practical metamaterial design using resistor-loaded dipoles is suggested and simulated to achieve desired effective media properties. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that abrupt and gradual switching can bypass the Rozanov bound and overcome potential causality issues.

Dipole polarizability of time-varying particles

M. S. Mirmoosa et al.

Summary: This paper explores the assumption of invariance under time translation in investigating electromagnetic phenomena and the possibilities of breaking this assumption. By contemplating the fundamental principles from a nonstationarity perspective, the authors revisit the concept of polarizability of small particles and the classical model of the polarizability of an oscillating electron. They also derive the effective permittivity for time-varying media and compare it with the conventional macroscopic Drude-Lorentz model. This research is important for understanding nonstationary scattering from small particles and homogenization of time-varying materials.

Summary: This study investigates the use of temporal switching to reduce signal reflections from thin films, extending quasi-normal mode theory to time switching and developing a new modeling approach for a broad class of time-switched structures. The formalism provides optimal switching strategies to maximize bandwidth with minimal reflection, showing promising prospects for time-switched nanophotonic and metamaterial systems to overcome the limits of traditional passive structures.

Summary: The study shows that subwavelength open resonators undergoing suitable temporal modulation can efficiently capture broadband incident waves into nonradiating structural eigenmodes, representing the first example of a BiC accessible to broadband light. These time-varying BiCs have the potential to overcome some bandwidth limitations of achromatic dispersion-engineered metalenses, highlighting their dynamic capabilities and expanding their reach for various applications.

Summary: This paper presents a glass-based double-side cascade film stack structure for visible-infrared ultrabroadband absorption, achieving an average absorption as high as 95% over a wide range of wavelengths from 0.4 μm to 20 μm. The proposed structure utilizes different bandgap materials for high absorption, as well as a metal-dielectric-like configuration and graded index profile arrangement for ultrabroadband absorption.

Casimir Light in Dispersive Nanophotonics

Jamison Sloan et al.

Summary: Time-varying optical media with actively modulated dielectric properties introduce novel effects in light propagation and are of current interest. In the quantum domain, time-dependent media can convert vacuum fluctuations into real photons. Despite being weak, these dynamical vacuum effects (DVEs) can be enhanced through nanophotonics techniques. This study presents a theory of weakly modulated DVEs in arbitrary nanostructured systems, incorporating time-modulation and dispersion through time-translation-breaking linear response theory. An efficient scheme for generating entangled surface polaritons is proposed based on time-modulation of the optical phonon frequency of a polar insulator.

Parametric Enhancement of Radiation from Electrically Small Antennas

Ahmed Mekawy et al.

Summary: Electrically small antennas have large quality factors and limited gain-bandwidth products due to the Bode-Fano limit, leading to a trade-off between antenna footprint and radiation characteristics. However, research shows that parametric phenomena can overcome this trade-off, allowing the realization of stable non-Foster wideband antennas that go beyond the limitations of passive systems. This study demonstrates this approach in a planar small loop antenna loaded with a time-varying capacitor, showing wideband radiation enhancement beyond passive scenarios.

Constitutive relations and adiabatic invariants for electromagnetic waves in a dynamic Lorentz medium

M. Bakunov et al.

Summary: This study derived constitutive relations for Lorentz media with a time-varying density and intrinsic frequency of oscillators, and obtained adiabatic invariants for electromagnetic waves in dynamic Lorentz media. If the oscillator density varies, the invariants differ from those for nondispersive dielectrics and plasmas, predicting a frequency shift accompanied by a decrease in wave energy. If the intrinsic frequency varies, the invariants coincide with those for nondispersive dielectrics, predicting wave amplification and attenuation with increasing and decreasing frequency, respectively. Additionally, it was shown that a medium with a decreasing density of oscillating dipoles cannot be described by a time-varying dielectric permittivity even in the nondispersive limit.
