Retrospective analysis of marine growth and relationships to return rates of Penobscot River Atlantic salmon

Miguel F. Barajas et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between growth during the entire marine stage and marine survival of Atlantic salmon. The results showed that growth of Penobscot River Atlantic salmon decreased during the second winter and second marine year starting in the 1990s, but compensatory growth relationships were observed. This indicates that diminished growth during late marine stages is associated with low return rates in this population.

The Evolving Role of External Forcing in North Atlantic SST Variability over the Last Millennium

Jeremy M. Klavans et al.

Summary: Previous studies have suggested that external forcing plays an increasingly important role in Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV). This study provides evidence from climate models, paleoreconstructions, and instrumental observations that supports the growing role for external forcing in AMV. The findings show that external forcing explains a significant portion of AMV variance, especially after 1950.

Model estimated baseflow for streams with endangered Atlantic Salmon in Maine, USA

Pamela J. Lombard et al.

Summary: A regression model was developed to estimate mean August baseflow in Maine streams with Atlantic Salmon habitat, using variables including sand and gravel aquifers and mean July precipitation. The model has a high R-2 value and prediction interval accuracy, and can be applied to assess baseflow and habitat conservation potential in the region. The model could help identify areas with high-quality habitat for Atlantic salmon due to the moderating effect of baseflows on stream temperatures during low-flow periods.
