Quantitative analysis of diffusion regimes in iron ore with low field NMR

Keelan T. O'Neill et al.

Summary: The use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques is limited by internal magnetic field gradients caused by differences in magnetic susceptibility at solid-fluid interfaces. We introduce a new model called the multiregime model to better capture diffusive behavior in iron ore rock samples. The multiregime model provides insight into the different diffusive regimes and helps understand the influence of diffusive decay on measurement accuracy.

Characterization of novel lunar highland and mare simulants for ISRU research applications

Maxim Isachenkov et al.

Summary: This study characterizes a lunar regolith simulant material developed by the University of Central Florida, which is considered suitable for regolith-focused additive manufacturing technologies. The simulant's mineral, chemical, fractional composition, morphology, and optical properties were analyzed using various methods such as XRF, XRD, SEM, and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. The results show that the simulant mimics the primary properties of the original lunar regolith and can be potentially used for ISRU research tasks.

Evidence of water on the lunar surface from Chang'E-5 in-situ spectra and returned samples

Jianjun Liu et al.

Summary: The distribution, characteristics, and sources of lunar water are still controversial. In this study, the Chang'E-5 mission conducted in-situ spectral observations and laboratory analysis of returned samples to investigate the hydroxyl contents in lunar soils. The results show that the hydroxyl contents in the Chang'E-5 landing site are relatively weak, consistent with predictions from remote sensing and ground-based telescopic data. The study also suggests that apatite may be an important source of excess hydroxyl observed in young mare regions.

Chang'E-5 samples reveal high water content in lunar minerals

Chuanjiao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study reveals that lunar surficial water is mainly derived from solar wind implantation on olivine, plagioclase, and pyroxene grains. The water content is influenced by exposure time, crystal structure, and mineral composition. The research suggests that minerals in lunar soils serve as important water reservoirs, and water formation and retention occur on airless bodies.

Low-Field Functional Group Resolved Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Mesoporous Silica

Neil Robinson et al.

Summary: Solid-fluid interactions are crucial for porous materials in various chemical processes, but the opaque nature of these systems hinders detailed characterization of interfacial phenomena. A low-magnetic-field two-dimensional H-1 nuclear spin relaxation measurement provides insights into adsorbate identity and interfacial dynamics, showcasing distinct relaxation responses correlated with adsorbate acidity. This approach offers a molecular-level perspective on interactions within optically opaque porous media.

Molecular water detected on the sunlit Moon by SOFIA

C. I. Honniball et al.

Summary: Observations on the Moon at 6 mu m wavelength region by the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) revealed a signature of molecular water, distinguishing it from other forms of hydration. The estimated water abundance ranges between 100 to 400 mu g g(-)(1) at high latitudes, potentially trapped within impact glasses or in between grains.

Availability of subsurface water-ice resources in the northern mid-latitudes of Mars

G. A. Morgan et al.

Summary: Multiple nations and private entities are working towards landing humans on Mars by utilizing Martian water-ice deposits for fuel production. The challenge lies in isolating accessible ice deposits within regions that optimize other preferred landing-site conditions. Through the SWIM project, they aim to determine the most likely regions for near-surface ice presence in the northern mid-latitudes.
