Dynamical tides in Jupiter and the role of interior structure

Yufeng Lin

Summary: The Juno spacecraft has obtained highly accurate tidal Love numbers for Jupiter, which are important for constraining its tidal response and interior structure. In order to utilize these observations, an accurate method to calculate Jupiter's tidal response and investigate the role of the interior structure is needed.

Combined magnetic and gravity measurements probe the deep zonal flows of the gas giants

E. Galanti et al.

Summary: Recent measurements from the Cassini mission at Saturn and the Juno mission at Jupiter have provided unprecedented accuracy on the gravity and magnetic fields of the gas giants. By combining gravity measurements with magnetic field observations, researchers were able to determine the vertical decay profile of the observed zonal flows on Saturn and Jupiter. The results show that the cloud-level winds extend with little decay until a certain depth, where they rapidly reduce in strength, indicating a possible interaction with the magnetic field in the semiconducting region.

A diffuse core in Saturn revealed by ring seismology

Christopher R. Mankovich et al.

Summary: Historically, the best constraints on the internal structures of giant planets have come from measurements of their gravity fields, which are mostly sensitive to the planet's outer regions. However, studies of Saturn's rings have detected waves driven by pulsation modes within the planet, offering independent seismic probes of Saturn's interior. These observations reveal gravity-mode pulsations that indicate a stable region against convection in Saturn's deep interior.
