Comparison of Topographic Roughness of Layered Deposits on Mars

Wei Cao et al.

Summary: Impact craters with layered ejecta deposits are common on Mars. The involvement of water and/or water ice is believed to be responsible for the formation of these ejecta. This study compares the roughness of these deposits with long-runout landslides and lobate debris aprons, in order to understand the emplacement mechanisms of layered ejecta deposits. The results suggest that the characteristics of the inner facies of the deposits and long-runout landslides are similar, while the outer facies are more similar to lobate debris aprons.

Layered Ejecta Craters in the Candidate Landing Areas of China's First Mars Mission (Tianwen-1): Implications for Subsurface Volatile Concentrations

Shengli Niu et al.

Summary: This study estimated the age of layered ejecta craters (LECs) on Mars and analyzed the variation of subsurface volatiles, particularly water ice. The results indicate that the LECs in the two candidate landing areas of the Tianwen-1 mission formed during the Amazonian and Hesperian periods. However, the concentrations of subsurface volatiles have undergone different evolution histories in different regions.

New Insights Into Subsurface Stratigraphy Northwest of Ascraeus Mons, Mars, Using the SHARAD and MARSIS Radar Sounders

E. S. Shoemaker et al.

Summary: In this study, SHARAD and MARSIS observations were used to investigate volcanic deposits in the Tharsis Volcanic Province on Mars, including their composition, density, thickness, and spatial distribution. The results showed that reflectors in the volcanic plains consisted of sequences of basaltic lava flows with interspersed pyroclastic material, dust, or regolith, while others corresponded to the base of lava flow fields. Additionally, reflectors were identified near Ascraeus' flank where lava had buried glacially derived sediment.

Layered subsurface in Utopia Basin of Mars revealed by Zhurong rover radar

Chao Li et al.

Summary: Exploring the subsurface of Utopia Planitia on Mars through the Zhurong rover's ground-penetrating radar survey has provided detailed images showing a multi-layered structure, suggesting episodic hydraulic flooding sedimentation that filled the basin. While no direct evidence of liquid water was found, the presence of saline ice in the subsurface cannot be ruled out.

Summary: Multiple nations and private entities are working towards landing humans on Mars by utilizing Martian water-ice deposits for fuel production. The challenge lies in isolating accessible ice deposits within regions that optimize other preferred landing-site conditions. Through the SWIM project, they aim to determine the most likely regions for near-surface ice presence in the northern mid-latitudes.
