Do Longer Dry Spells Associated With Warmer Years Compound the Stress on Global Water Resources?

Suresh Hettiarachchi et al.

Summary: Availability of water resources is significantly affected by changes in seasonal rainfall, with water often in short supply when most needed. This study found that warmer summers tend to have longer dry spells globally, which increases the vulnerability of water resources, particularly in large cities.

A global assessment of change in flood volume with surface air temperature

Wei He et al.

Summary: This study uses global flow data from non-urban catchments to investigate the sensitivity of flood volume to changes in concurrent surface air temperature. It finds that most of the world shows decreases in flood volumes with increasing temperature, with larger decreases for frequent events and smaller decreases for rarer events. The study also highlights the significant sensitivity of flood volume in large tropical catchments to flood percentiles and catchment size.

Future of Freshwater Ecosystems in a 1.5°C Warmer World

Samantha J. Capon et al.

Summary: Freshwater ecosystems are highly vulnerable to global warming due to their sensitivity to changes in water quality and flow regimes, as well as existing threats from human activities. Even a modest increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius in global warming poses significant risks to these ecosystems and the essential services they provide. Efforts to mitigate these impacts and prioritize freshwater ecosystems in climate action policies and management are crucial to reduce adverse outcomes and ensure water and food security.

Robust Climate Change Adaptation for Environmental Flows in the Goulburn River, Australia

Andrew John et al.

Summary: Climate change poses severe risks for environmental flows worldwide, and there is an urgent need for robust environmental flow programs to adapt to changing flow regimes. Testing adaptation options under different climate futures is crucial for improving ecological outcomes and allocation reliability in river management. Combining multiple adaptation options may yield greater benefits and enhance resilience under uncertain future conditions.
