Managing risk of non-indigenous species establishment associated with ballast water discharges from ships with bypassed or inoperable ballast water management systems

Johanna Bradie et al.

Summary: Ballast water is a major pathway for introducing non-indigenous aquatic species, which can cause significant ecological damage. While most international ships will install a ballast water management system (BWMS) by 2024, variations in water quality at global ports or system malfunctions may limit their effectiveness. This study investigated the risk of non-indigenous species establishment associated with BWMS inoperability and proposed potential mitigation strategies.

Comparison of Recruitment Patterns of Sessile Marine Invertebrates According to Substrate Characteristics

Seongjun Bae et al.

Summary: Investigating the relationship between benthic communities and artificial structures or substrates can help understand the factors influencing marine biofouling. Our study compared the community structures attached to different substrates in three harbors over a period of 15 months. Significant differences were found in the community structure among the survey sites and between natural and artificial substrates. These results provide basic information for biofouling management in the marine environment.

Response of native and non-indigenous zooplankton to inherent system features and management in two Basque estuaries: A niche decomposition approach

Ziortza Barroeta et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the realized ecological niches of native zooplankton and non-indigenous species (NIS) in the estuaries of Bilbao and Urdaibai. The results showed that salinity gradients and seasonal variations played a major role in determining the spatio-temporal niches of zooplankton in both estuaries. Additionally, river discharge and hydrological stability also influenced the distribution of species in the estuaries. The estuary of Urdaibai had less variation in species niche, while the estuary of Bilbao experienced significant changes, possibly due to environmental improvements.

Anthropogenic Modifications to Estuaries Facilitate the Invasion of Non-Native Species

Enrique Gonzalez-Ortegon et al.

Summary: The presence of non-indigenous species in coastal waters has been increasing, with ballast water being a significant pathway for their unintentional introduction. Some marine organisms have evolved detoxification mechanisms to withstand exposure to toxicants. The study suggests that anthropogenic modifications benefit NIS with broad environmental tolerances, highlighting the need for efficient Ballast Water Management Systems to address current environmental challenges.
