Pathologic response and residual tumor cellularity after neo-adjuvant chemotherapy predict prognosis in breast cancer patients

Damiano Gentile et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify predictive factors for pathologic complete response (pCR) after neo-adjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and compare different outcomes of patients with pCR or partial pathologic response (pPR) and with different residual tumor cellularity (RTC) patterns. The study found that tumor stage before NAC, breast cancer subtype, and vascular invasion are significantly associated with pCR. Patients with pCR and RTC<40% have longer disease-free survival, distant disease-free survival, and overall survival.

The 2021 WHO Classification of Tumors of the Thymus and Mediastinum: What Is New in Thymic Epithelial, Germ Cell, and Mesenchymal Tumors?

Alexander Marx et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of the new developments in the fifth edition of the WHO classification of thymic epithelial tumors, mediastinal germ cell tumors, and mesenchymal neoplasms, focusing on diagnostic, molecular, and conceptual advances. Diagnostic advances include immunohistochemical characterization and the identification of genetic translocations. Molecular and tumor biological advancements include the finding that thymomas and most thymic carcinomas lack currently targetable mutations, but typically have a PD-L1(high) phenotype. Additionally, conceptual advancements for the classification of thymic NETs are discussed.

Thymic Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma A Clinicopathologic and Molecular Study

Takayuki Murase et al.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical, histopathologic, and molecular features of thymic mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) in 20 cases. The study found that the fusion gene CRTC1-MAML2 was associated with lower stage, and the findings are expected to contribute to the management of this rare tumor.

Thymic Carcinomas-A Concise Multidisciplinary Update on Recent Developments From the Thymic Carcinoma Working Group of the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group

Anja C. Roden et al.

Summary: Thymic carcinomas are rare and invasive tumors with a large variety of subtypes and lack of unique morphologic and immunophenotypic features, which poses challenges for research. However, advances have been made in diagnostic imaging, surgical approaches, systemic therapies, and radiation therapy techniques. Molecular alterations and evaluation of new approaches to radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy contribute to a better understanding and treatment of thymic carcinomas.

CD117, BAP1, MTAP, and TdT Is a Useful Immunohistochemical Panel to Distinguish Thymoma from Thymic Carcinoma

Mounika Angirekula et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify immunohistochemical markers that can aid in distinguishing between thymomas and thymic carcinomas. The results showed that a combination panel of CD117, BAP1, mTAP, and TdT can predict thymic carcinomas and thymomas with a certain level of accuracy.

Clinicopathological features and current treatment outcomes of neuroendocrine thymic tumours

Wentao Fang et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological features, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of 146 patients with neuroendocrine thymic tumors. The majority of patients had advanced disease, and complete resection was associated with better survival. Specific diagnostic tools and novel therapeutic agents are needed to improve the management outcomes of this disease.

A prognostic score for non-small cell lung cancer resected after neoadjuvant therapy in comparison with the tumor-node-metastases classification and major pathological response

Philipp Zens et al.

Summary: Studies on the prognostic accuracy of the TNM classification in lung cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant therapy are limited, while tumor regression and major pathological responses are acknowledged prognostic factors. A novel combined prognostic score outperformed traditional TNM staging in predicting patient outcomes.

Thymomectomy plus total thymectomy versus simple thymomectomy for early-stage thymoma without myasthenia gravis: a European Society of Thoracic Surgeons Thymic Working Group Study

Francesco Guerrera et al.

Summary: The study compared the short- and long-term outcomes of simple thymomectomy (ST) versus thymothymectomy (TT) in non-myasthenia gravis (MG) early-stage thymomas. The TT group had significantly better 5-year freedom from recurrence and 5-year overall survival rate compared to the ST group, without an increase in postoperative morbidity rate.
