Current therapeutic modalities and chemopreventive role of natural products in liver cancer: Progress and promise

Amit Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: Liver cancer is a major public health concern with increasing clinical cases and a 5-year survival rate of 30%-35% after diagnosis. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the primary subtype and accounts for approximately 75% of liver cancer cases. Treatment options depend on the stage of progression and include surgery, ablation, radiotherapy, drugs, and immunotherapy. Various metabolic and signaling pathways, as well as dysbiosis, play important roles in HCC progression. Drug-induced toxicity is a challenge, leading to the search for effective and safe medications such as natural compounds. This review summarizes the current research, treatment strategies, and chemopreventive role of natural products in managing liver cancer.

A novel nomogram predicting the early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma patients after R0 resection

Huanhuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for early recurrence and develop a predictive model for early recurrence in HCC patients. The study found that elevated levels of AFP and VEGF-A, microvascular invasion, intratumor necrosis, and surgical margin were independent risk factors for early recurrence. A model incorporating blood biomarkers and pathological variables achieved good predictive performance for early recurrence in HCC patients.

TELO2 induced progression of colorectal cancer by binding with RICTOR through mTORC2

Zheng Guo et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common cancer with limited treatment strategies. This study shows that TELO2 is significantly upregulated in CRC, and its inhibition can restrain cell growth, cell cycle, and metastasis. TELO2 overexpression is positively correlated with age, lymph node metastasis, and TNM stage in CRC patients.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

A Nomogram for Preoperative Estimation of Microvascular Invasion Risk in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Single-Center Analyses With Internal Validation

Jiarui Yang et al.

Summary: A nomogram was established to predict the risk of microvascular invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) preoperatively, which showed good discrimination, calibration, and effectiveness in internal validation. The predictive model demonstrated specificity of 80.7% and sensitivity of 58.7% at a cut-off value of 0.312, providing valuable guidance for treatment planning.
