Physical exercise training in patients with a Fontan circulation: A systematic review

Linda E. Scheffers et al.

Summary: Exercise training in Fontan patients is likely safe and has positive effects on exercise capacity, cardiac function, and quality of life. Encouraging exercise training in Fontan patients is recommended, and further studies are needed to assess optimal training type, intensity, duration, and long-term effects.

Exercise Capacity and Predictors of Performance After Fontan: Results from the Pediatric Heart Network Fontan 3 Study

David J. Goldberg et al.

Summary: Impaired exercise performance following Fontan surgery is an indicator of morbidity. Longitudinal data from a single-center exist, but contemporary multi-center data is lacking. The decline in submaximal exercise is slower than maximal exercise among Fontan patients, with female gender and left ventricular morphology associated with better performance.

Determinants of exercise limitation in contemporary paediatric Fontan patients with an extra cardiac conduit

Lisette M. Harteveld et al.

Summary: The study found that contemporary pediatric Fontan patients have impaired exercise capacity but preserved chronotropic competence. Exercise performance is correlated with heart rate at rest, diastolic function, and aortic stiffness.

Heart Rate Variability and Its Associations with Organ Complications in Adults after Fontan Operation

Magdalena Okolska et al.

Summary: The study found that HRV parameters were reduced in patients after FO, and were associated with patients' age, time since surgery, impaired exercise capacity, chronotropic incompetence parameters, and multiorgan complications. Variables such as saturated O-2 at rest, percentage difference between adjacent NN intervals of > 50 ms duration, and peak heart rate were identified as independent predictors of the chronotropic index. The results suggest novel pathophysiological mechanisms linking HRV, physical performance, and organ damage in FO patients.
