Rainfall shocks, child mortality, and water infrastructure

Summary: The study finds that negative rainfall shocks lead to an increase in child mortality, especially in low-income countries and countries dependent on agriculture. In low-income countries, the impact of negative rainfall shocks is mitigated in districts located downstream to dams, particularly in less affluent areas. Additionally, the effect of rainfall fluctuations persists for up to three years following the shock.

How Much Should We Trust the Dictator's GDP Growth Estimates?

Summary: This study examines the overstatement of economic growth in autocracies by comparing self-reported GDP figures to night-time light recorded by satellites. The findings show that autocratic regimes tend to have a higher elasticity between night-time light and GDP, even after considering differences in various country characteristics. The degree of overstatement is greater in autocracies with stronger incentives to exaggerate growth or weaker constraints on manipulation. The results suggest that autocracies inflate yearly GDP growth by approximately 35%, and adjusting the data for manipulation provides a more nuanced understanding of their recent economic success.

Ethnic Diversity and Growth: Revisiting the Evidence

Summary: The relationship between ethnic heterogeneity and economic growth is complex, with cross-country studies finding a negative or statistically insignificant link, while city-level analysis shows a positive effect on wages and productivity. There is generally a trade-off between the economic benefits of diversity and the costs of heterogeneity. In smaller geographical areas, diversity is positively correlated with growth, attributed in Africa to increased trade at the boundaries between ethnic groups due to ethnic specialization.
