FGF-21 and GDF-15 are increased in migraine and associated with the severity of migraine-related disability

Jiahui He et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the serum levels of FGF-21 and GDF-15 in migraine patients and their association with migraine-related disability. The study found that levels of FGF-21 and GDF-15 were significantly higher in migraine sufferers compared to healthy controls. Higher levels of FGF-21 were observed in chronic migraine patients compared to episodic migraine patients. Serum levels of FGF-21 and GDF-15 were also associated with the severity of migraine-related disability.

Brain barriers and their potential role in migraine pathophysiology

Astrid Wiggers et al.

Summary: Migraine is a neurological disease involving peptides that can induce vasodilation and affect pain transmission. There is debate whether these peptides act within or outside the central nervous system. Dysfunction of brain barriers during migraine attacks is speculated to facilitate the passage of migraine-inducing peptides into the central nervous system.

The effects of certain TRP channels and voltage-gated KCNQ/Kv7 channel opener retigabine on calcitonin gene-related peptide release in the trigeminovascular system

Arzu Citak et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of certain transient receptor potential channels and voltage-gated potassium channels on the release of calcitonin gene-related peptide. The results showed that agonists of these channels induced the release of calcitonin gene-related peptide, which could be blocked or reduced by specific antagonists and retigabine. This suggests that antagonists of these channels or retigabine may be effective in migraine therapy by inhibiting the neurogenic inflammation that requires calcitonin gene-related peptide release.

CGRP and PACAP-38 play an important role in diagnosing pediatric migraine

Junhui Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential diagnostic value of CGRP and PACAP-38 in pediatric migraines. The results showed that CGRP and PACAP-38 levels were elevated in pediatric migraine patients, with higher levels in patients with aura. ROC and logistic regression analyses indicated that CGRP and PACAP-38 are good indicators for diagnosing and differentiating pediatric migraines, with the combination of both showing the highest diagnostic value.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Oxidative Stress in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Maria Jose Lopez-Armada et al.

Summary: Controlling excessive mitochondrial oxidative stress can provide new targets for the treatment of chronic inflammation or diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Mitochondrial alterations play a role in autoimmune diseases through the interaction between metabolism and innate immunity. Mitochondrial dysfunction can activate inflammatory pathways and impact cell death and epigenetic regulation. Additionally, there may be a relationship between dietary components and the onset and progression of RA.

Plasma levels of vasoactive neuropeptides in pediatric patients with migraine during attack and attack-free periods

Fatma Hanci et al.

Summary: The study found that plasma levels of PACAP-38 and vasoactive intestinal peptide were higher in pediatric migraine patients compared to controls, while levels of calcitonin gene-related peptide and substance P remained unchanged. No significant difference in neuropeptide levels was found between attack and attack-free periods.

Summary: This review highlights the mechanism of GDF15 expression in response to organelle stress, particularly mitochondrial stress, and its association with pathophysiological conditions or diseases. It emphasizes the dual systemic effects of GDF15 in response to mitochondrial stress, serving as a potential mitokine.

The Mitochondrial Biomarkers FGF-21 and GDF-15 in Patients with Episodic and Chronic Migraine

Philipp Burow et al.

Summary: The study found that serum levels of GDF-15 were higher in migraine patients compared to controls, while FGF-21 levels did not differ. There was no correlation between the biomarkers and headache frequency, but GDF-15 levels were positively associated with age and FGF-21 levels were influenced by BMI. Confounding factors such as age and BMI should be considered in interpreting previous studies on this topic.
