Morphology and phylogeny of Prorocentrum porosum sp. nov. (Dinophyceae): A new benthic toxic dinoflagellate from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

Edgar Arteaga-Sogamoso et al.

Summary: A new marine benthic toxic Prorocentrum species, P. porosum sp. nov., was described from tropical/subtropical regions of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was characterized by specific cell structures and phylogenetic analysis revealed its relationship with other Prorocentrum species. This species was found to contain low amounts of okadaic acid in toxin analyses.

Prevalence of okadaic acid in benthic organisms associated Prorocentrum lima complex in a sub-tropical estuary

Angel Ramon Moreira-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The study found relatively low concentrations of lipophilic toxins in different benthic compartments of Paranagua Bay. Okadaic acid (OA) was detected in macrophytes and benthic marine animals. Although OA concentrations were below levels associated with acute human intoxication, potential chronic effects on benthic animals and their consumers cannot be disregarded.

New information about the toxicological profile of Prorocentrum panamense (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae) and its global distribution

Greta Gaiani et al.

Summary: This study reported the first record of a potential toxin-producing species, Prorocentrum panamense, in the Canary Islands and characterized its toxicity. The distribution area of P. panamense was expanded, previously limited to the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arabian Gulf, and the Caribbean.

Taxonomy and toxin profile of harmful benthic Prorocentrum (Dinophyceae) species from the Xisha Islands, South China Sea

Jian Zou et al.

Summary: The study on benthic Prorocentrum in the Xisha Islands revealed a diversity of species, including some that were newly recorded in Chinese waters. Analysis of their toxin profiles showed that some of these species produced toxins that could pose a potential risk of diarrheic shellfish poisoning in the area.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of five harmful dinoflagellate genera at different depths in the south of El Hierro island, as well as the influence of abiotic parameters on their distribution. Two vertical distribution patterns were observed, with water motion being identified as the most significant parameter.

Temporal and spatial distribution of epibenthic dinoflagellates in the Kattegat-Skagerrak, NE Atlantic-Focus on Prorocentrum lima and Coolia monotis

Summary: This study investigated the biodiversity and distribution of potentially toxic epibenthic dinoflagellates along the west coast of Sweden, confirming the presence of two toxigenic species. The study found no significant temporal variation in cell densities of these species over two summers. The results suggest a potential risk of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning events caused by one of the species, highlighting the importance of monitoring and management in shellfish aquaculture.
