Incidence, risk and protective factors of symptoms after colonoscopy

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and factors associated with post-colonoscopy symptoms. The study found that approximately half of the patients developed new gastrointestinal symptoms after the examination, with epigastric/abdominal bloating, pain, and dyspeptic symptoms being the most common. Symptoms were associated with female sex, an increasing number of symptoms developed during bowel preparation, and somatic symptoms, while a better mood was inversely associated with symptoms. The findings suggest that improving bowel preparation tolerability may reduce the incidence of post-colonoscopy symptoms, especially in more vulnerable patients.

Two sides of every coin: individuals' experiences of undergoing colorectal cancer screening by faecal immunochemical test and colonoscopy

Summary: The acceptability of colorectal cancer screening procedures is crucial for the success of screening programs. This study explored how individuals experience CRC screening, finding that experiences vary from having no worries to experiencing bothersome emotions, logistical concerns, inconsistent information, and unmet expectations. Improving patient experiences may involve using one-sample FITs, optimizing bowel preparation for colonoscopies, and delivering clear information and emotional support at the right time.

The Newcastle ENDOPREM™: a validated patient reported experience measure for gastrointestinal endoscopy

Summary: This study developed a patient-reported experience measure for gastrointestinal procedures by conducting interviews with patients and refining questionnaire items through cognitive interviews. The final questionnaire, consisting of 54 questions, assessed patient experience across different stages of the procedure. The Newcastle ENDOPREM (TM) may be used to compare patient experiences in clinical care and research.
