Studying beef production evolution to plan for ecological intensification of grazing ecosystems

Nicolas Caram et al.

Summary: This study analyses the past and current dynamics of the Uruguayan beef production sector and explores potential future scenarios. The study finds that the growth of beef production has been primarily driven by the expansion of pasture area and improved animal performance. However, the current weaning rate and the number of replacement heifers that have first pregnancy are both low, indicating inefficiency in national beef production. The study suggests shifting the focus of beef production from improved pastures to native pastures to improve ecological intensification and mitigate environmental impacts.

Biomass fine-scale variation is predictive of functional composition and diversity in grazed grassland

Nicolas Caram et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of spatial and temporal variation in above-ground biomass on leaf traits and functional groups in grasslands, and found that the variation in above-ground biomass is associated with functional composition and diversity. The results suggest that grazing management practices can be used to enhance biodiversity conservation and livestock production in native grasslands.

Stocking method and terminology in grazing management: Evaluation of assertions from educational, outreach, and engagement programs

Miguel S. Castillo et al.

Summary: In this article, we reviewed the terminology and assertions about grazing management, specifically the stocking method, and evaluated their validity based on scientific evidence from literature, including a chapter on Prescribed Grazing on Pasturelands from NRCS. We presented these assertions as questions in order to stimulate further discussion on the topic and determine if they have been adequately supported or assessed in the existing scientific evidence.

Herbage mass and allowance and animal genotype affect daily herbage intake, productivity, and efficiency of beef cows grazing native subtropical grassland

Martin Do Carmo et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate herbage intake of straightbred and crossbred beef cows in Campos grasslands and found that crossbred cows and High herbage allowance were beneficial for animal productivity and biological efficiency.

Configuration of daily grazing and searching of growing beef cattle in grassland: observational study

N. Caram et al.

Summary: This study investigated the daily grazing behavior of growing cattle on Campos grasslands under different management practices, focusing on the impact of pasture attributes on intake. The research found that animals prioritize quality in the morning and quantity in the afternoon, adjusting their grazing activities accordingly.

Native Grasslands at the Core: A New Paradigm of Intensification for the Campos of Southern South America to Increase Economic and Environmental Sustainability

Martin Jaurena et al.

Summary: The text discusses extensive livestock production in southern South America, emphasizing the need for technological options to increase profitability while supporting conservation of native grasslands. It proposes a shift towards a flexible dashboard of intensification options to address productivity drawbacks and maintain environmental sustainability. Integrating intensification options is shown to improve profitability and environmental sustainability in Campos ecosystems.
