Subduction initiation-induced rapid emplacement of garnet-bearing peridotites at a nascent forearc: Petrological and Os-Li isotopic evidence from the Purang ophiolite, Tibet

Xiao-Han Gong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution and dynamics of garnet peridotite protoliths in the Purang ophiolitic peridotites in south Tibet, providing insights into the poorly understood evolution of the deep oceanic lithosphere. The wide variations in chemical compositions and Os model ages of the Purang peridotites suggest a heterogeneous oceanic mantle lithosphere, with evidence of recent subduction initiation-related melt percolation and tectonic emplacement.

Adakite-like granitoids of Songkultau: A relic of juvenile Cambrian arc in Kyrgyz Tien Shan

D. Konopelko et al.

Summary: The Terskey Suture zone in early Paleozoic is composed of dismembered ophiolites, primitive volcanics, and deep-marine sediments. In the Songkul area, the Songkultau intrusion is characterized by coarse-grained gneissose quartz diorites and tonalites with adakitic geochemical characteristics. The formation of the Andean type arc in Cambrian and Ordovician was marked by uplift, erosion, and deposition of coarse clastic sediments.

Terminal Suturing Between the Tarim Craton and the Yili-Central Tianshan Arc: Insights From Melange-Ocean Plate Stratigraphy, Detrital Zircon Ages, and Provenance of the South Tianshan Accretionary Complex

Nijiati Abuduxun et al.

Summary: New field relations and U-Pb ages of detrital zircons from Middle Devonian-Upper Triassic sedimentary rocks in the South Tianshan indicate the continuous northward subduction of the South Tianshan oceanic plate until its final collision with the Tarim Craton in the Late Triassic, providing new constraints on the final amalgamation of the Altaid orogen. The detrital zircon ages suggest a mixed provenance from the Yili-Central Tianshan arc and isolated seamounts/oceanic plateaus within the South Tianshan oceanic plate, while the integrated field observations confirm the presence of an accreted oceanic plate structure in the region.

Mariana-type ophiolites constrain the establishment of modern plate tectonic regime during Gondwana assembly

Jinlong Yao et al.

Summary: This study presents a 518 million year old Mariana-type subduction initiation ophiolite from northern Tibet, suggesting the establishment of modern plate tectonic regime in the early Cambrian. The global tectonic re-organization during this time period, likely influenced by secular cooling of the Earth and sediment lubrication of subduction zones from widespread surface erosion, marked the formation of the contemporary Earth. The identification of similar ophiolites, along with geological and chemical proxies, provides new constraints on the timing of modern plate tectonics establishment and its connections to surficial changes on Earth.
