Examining the Socio-Economic and Natural Resource Risks of Food Estate Development on Peatlands: A Strategy for Economic Recovery and Natural Resource Sustainability

Irma Yeny et al.

Summary: Given the impact of COVID-19 on food and agriculture, the government of Indonesia plans to establish the Food Estate National Program to ensure food security. However, this program may pose risks to biodiversity and community livelihoods due to its implementation on peatlands. The study recommends developing strategies that protect natural resources, replace exotic plants with native peat plants, and enhance the capacity of farmers for sustainable, low-impact cultivation techniques.

Rewetting global wetlands effectively reduces major greenhouse gas emissions

Junyu Zou et al.

Summary: Carbon and nitrogen losses from degraded wetlands and methane emissions from flooded wetlands are important factors contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. The study shows that greenhouse gas emissions from wetlands are lowest when the water table is near the surface. Re-wetting wetlands can significantly reduce future emissions.

Tropical peatlands and their contribution to the global carbon cycle and climate change

Kelly Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of tropical peatlands, highlighting their biophysical characteristics, distribution, carbon stock, role in the global climate, and the impacts of human disturbances on carbon accumulation rates and greenhouse gas emissions. Despite being a significant carbon sink, tropical peatlands are still under-researched, with gaps in knowledge regarding their distribution, depth, carbon stock, and fluxes.

Revisiting tropical peatlands in Indonesia: Semi-detailed mapping, extent and depth distribution assessment

Markus Anda et al.

Summary: A detailed spatial inventory of tropical peatlands in Indonesia was conducted using a standard method protocol from 2013 to 2019, providing the first systematic census of peatlands in Indonesia. Peat depth was classified into six categories, with exceptionally deep peatlands mainly found on Kalimantan and Sumatera Islands.

Paludiculture as a sustainable land use alternative for tropical peatlands: A review

Zu Dienle Tan et al.

Summary: This review examines the importance of carbon storage in peatlands for climate change mitigation and explores the concept of paludiculture as a sustainable alternative for peatland use. The application of paludiculture in tropical regions is less understood compared to temperate regions, and there are ambiguities surrounding its definitions, key themes, and future directions. Further research is needed to evaluate the sustainability of paludiculture practices in the context of carbon sequestration in peat soils.

No aggregate deforestation reductions from rollout of community land titles in Indonesia yet

Sebastian Kraus et al.

Summary: The Indonesian government plans to grant community titles for 12.7 million hectares of land to communities living in and around forests, but initial research shows that community titles aimed at conservation did not decrease deforestation; rather, they may increase forest loss. On the other hand, community titles in zones aimed at timber production have shown to decrease deforestation.
