Exposure to ultraviolet-B radiation increases the susceptibility of mosquitoes to infection with dengue virus

Lesley A. Alton et al.

Summary: By 2100, it is predicted that greenhouse gases will reduce ozone and cloud cover over the tropics, leading to increased exposure of organisms to harmful UV-B radiation. UV-B radiation has damaging effects on DNA and plays a significant role in modulating immune function and disease susceptibility in humans and vertebrates. The impact of UV-B radiation on invertebrate immune function is largely unknown, but it has been found to impair insect immune response and make them more susceptible to infection with important pathogens.
