East Asian hydroclimate responses to the Eocene-Oligocene transition in the Weihe Basin, central China

Yichao Wang et al.

Summary: During the Eocene-Oligocene transition, there was a significant global cooling event which led to changes in the hydroclimate in Asian monsoon dominated regions. A high-resolution hydroclimate record from central China reveals a shift in sedimentary environment and significant changes in sediment grain size in response to this cooling event and the Early Oligocene Glacial Maximum. The variations in hydroclimate were also influenced by orbital frequencies.

Astronomical Forcing on Loess Deposition in the Junggar Basin Since the Late Pliocene

Zhixiang Wang et al.

Summary: Deciphering the frequency of dust outbreaks in inland Asia during the late Cenozoic is crucial for predicting future hydroclimate in arid regions of China. This study presents a sedimentary sequence from the southern Junggar Basin in Northwestern China, dating back to the past 3.5 million years. The findings suggest that the Westerly derived moisture supply and dust input into inland Asia have different responses to orbital forcing since 3.5 million years ago. This highlights the importance of considering different drivers for moisture supply and dust transport in understanding hydroclimate changes.

East Asian lake hydrology modulated by global sea-level variations in the Eocene warmhouse

Yiquan Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates four terrestrial basins in mid-latitudes of East Asia, refining the cyclostratigraphy of the middle-late Eocene and deciphering high-resolution lake hydrological changes. It reveals that lake-level changes were influenced by global climate changes, and global sea-level variations may drive hydroclimate and freshwater resources in East Asia during the Eocene.

The 173-kyr Obliquity Cycle Pacing the Asian Monsoon in the Eastern Chinese Loess Plateau From Late Miocene to Pliocene

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted magnetostratigraphy and cyclostratigraphy on an eolian red clay sequence in the eastern Chinese Loess Plateau, and found that the unconventional 173-kyr obliquity modulated cycle is significant for reconstructing terrestrial air circulation and shows distinct characteristics in the cyclic sedimentary patterns of East Asia monsoon deposits.

Sedimentary noise modeling of lake-level change in the Late Triassic Newark Basin of North America

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: Two competing hypotheses, glacioeustasy and groundwater aquifer eustasy, were evaluated for their impact on global sea-level changes during the Late Triassic. Sedimentary noise modeling and principal component analysis were used to reconstruct lake level fluctuations, revealing a link between million-year scale lake-level variations and astronomical forcing. This study highlights the importance of high-resolution, objective reconstructions of sea- and lake-levels for further testing these hypotheses under warm conditions.

East Asian Monsoonal Climate Sensitivity Changed in the Late Pliocene in Response to Northern Hemisphere Glaciations

Ze Zhang et al.

Summary: Sedimentary archives from the Mio-Pliocene and Pleistocene periods in NE Tibet show a different response to orbital forcing. While the Mio-Pliocene records demonstrate a monotonic response dominated by eccentricity, the Pleistocene records display a more stochastic response that varies regionally and temporally. The transition between these two responses is attributed to the increase in Northern Hemisphere ice volume, leading to a decreased monsoonal rainfall in the late Pliocene and a heightened response to obliquity and climate stochasticity.

Astronomical forcing of lake evolution in the Lanzhou Basin during early Miocene period

Zhixiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study presents evidence of orbital-scale variability of the East Asian summer monsoon in the early Miocene period, with dominant cyclical patterns of approximately 100 kyr eccentricity. This variability is linked to Antarctic ice sheet modulations and changes in weathering intensity in the Lanzhou Basin, possibly influenced by changes in westerly moisture due to orogenic barriers and uplift of NE Tibet during the late Oligocene-early Miocene period.

Distinct responses of late Miocene eolian and lacustrine systems to astronomical forcing in NE Tibet

Zhixiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study uses sediment archives to reconstruct climate changes and orbital forcing during the late Miocene in Northeast China, revealing different responses of the East Asian summer and winter monsoons to astronomical forcing. This further confirms the variability of East Asian climate on orbital time scales.

Global warming-induced Asian hydrological climate transition across the Miocene-Pliocene boundary

Hong Ao et al.

Summary: Our research suggests that the warming during the Miocene-Pliocene boundary increased summer monsoon moisture transport over East Asia, while also leading to aridification in Central Asia through increased evaporation. Additionally, high-resolution monsoon records indicate a dynamic response to eccentricity modulation of solar insolation with periodicities of around 405,000 years and approximately 100,000 years between 8.1 and 3.4 million years ago.

Orbital tuning for the middle Eocene to early Oligocene Monte Cagnero Section (Central Italy): Paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic implications

Marcus V. L. Kochhann et al.

Summary: This paper presents a refined calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and an orbitally tuned age model for the Monte Cagnero section spanning the middle Eocene to the early Oligocene, revealing the evolution of Earth's climate during this period. The study found that the MECO event coincides with minimum values in the 2.4 Myr and 405 kyr eccentricity cycles, while water cooling occurred after around 36.8 million years ago.

East Asian paleoclimate change in the Weihe Basin (central China) since the middle Eocene revealed by clay mineral analysis

Hengzhi Lyu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that since the middle Eocene, the chemical weathering in the Weihe River watershed gradually weakened, as shown by the decreasing chemical index of illite, illite crystallinity, ratio of smectite to illite, and chlorite. This indicates that the climate in the Weihe Basin region was relatively warm and humid compared to the current period.
