Monitoring Oasis Cotton Fields Expansion in Arid Zones Using the Google Earth Engine: A Case Study in the Ogan-Kucha River Oasis, Xinjiang, China

Lijing Han et al.

Summary: In this study, the spatial distribution of cotton fields in the Ogan-Kucha River oasis in Xinjiang was classified using a random forest machine-learning algorithm on the Google Earth Engine platform. The mulching process was considered for accurate classification. The results show that Sentinel 2 satellite images have the best classification accuracy and can successfully distinguish cotton fields from roads. Spectral reflectance of the cotton fields changed significantly after mulching, and mulched drip irrigation may lead to a decrease in groundwater levels in oases.

Early mapping of winter wheat in Henan province of China using time series of Sentinel-2 data

Xianda Huang et al.

Summary: Accurate mapping of winter wheat in its early stages is crucial for crop growth monitoring and yield forecasting. This study proposes a framework using spectral and temporal information of Sentinel-2 images for early season mapping of winter wheat. Results show that winter wheat can be mapped accurately in the early overwintering period, with overall accuracy comparable to post-season mapping.

A novel surface water index using local background information for long term and large-scale Landsat images

Linrong Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the accuracy of water extraction using remote sensing images by introducing contrast difference water index (CDWI) and shadow difference water index (SDWI) in comparison to the modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI). By combining the advantages of CDWI and SDWI, a background difference water index (BDWI) is proposed to extract surface water under complex backgrounds. The results show that BDWI outperforms other methods in accuracy and stability, especially in areas with varying backgrounds such as urban and non-urban regions.
