A pixel-wise calculation of soil evaporative efficiency with thermal/optical remote sensing and meteorological reanalysis data for downscaling microwave soil moisture

Hao Sun et al.

Summary: Soil evaporative efficiency (SEE) is estimated by the relative difference between soil temperature (Ts) and its maximum (Ts(max)) and minimum (Ts(min)) values at 'minimum and maximum' soil moisture (SM). This thermal indicator of SM has been proven effective in downscaling satellite microwave SM in some local areas. However, the determination of Ts(max) and Ts(min) is usually empirical, limiting its wider application.

Assessment of 24 soil moisture datasets using a new in situ network in the Shandian River Basin of China

Jingyao Zheng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated different soil moisture datasets using a new wireless sensor network and found that the latest Climate Change Initiative combined product had the best agreement with in situ measurements. Factors such as local acquisition time, physical surface temperature, and vegetation optical depth were also found to impact the accuracy of soil moisture products.

Spatial-Temporal Pattern and Influencing Factors of Drought Impacts on Agriculture in China

Xiyuan Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial-temporal pattern and dominant influence of natural and human factors on agricultural drought disasters in China. The results show significant fluctuations in agricultural drought disasters from 1950 to 2019, with a decreasing severity from north to south. The total sown area of crops, precipitation, effective irrigation area, domestic patent application authorization, and regional GDP are identified as the top influencing factors. The findings deepen the understanding of agricultural drought disasters and provide a scientific basis for monitoring, evaluation, and early warning of drought events.

Root-zone soil moisture estimation based on remote sensing data and deep learning

Yinglan A et al.

Summary: Root-zone soil moisture is a crucial factor in eco-hydrological processes. In this study, the ConvLSTM model, combined with remote sensing-based variables, was used to estimate root-zone soil moisture. The model showed significantly higher fitting coefficients compared to existing products, especially for deep layers.

Soil moisture-based index for agricultural drought assessment: SMADI application in Pernambuco State-Brazil

Alzira Gabrielle Soares Saraiva Souza et al.

Summary: The study estimated meteorological and agricultural drought in different climatic regions of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, using satellite data, with a focus on the Soil Moisture Agricultural Drought Index (SMADI). Results showed that SMADI could provide early warning of drought impacts on rainfed agricultural systems and was more sensitive to identifying water stress in sorghum crops compared to other indices.

Evaluating eco-environment in urban agglomeration from a vegetation-impervious surface-soil-air framework: an example in Ningxia, China

Hao Sun et al.

Summary: Urban agglomerations (UA), the fastest growing regional types in recent years, are significant for sustainability. A new remote sensing model of UA eco-environment (RSUAE) based on a vegetation-impervious surface-soil-air (VISA) framework was developed to integrate various factors such as greenness, dryness, imperviousness, moisture, heat, and air turbidity. The RSUAE model proved effective in depicting differences in eco-environment quality among varied land cover types in UA, with implications for comprehensive evaluation of UA eco-environment quality.

Evaluating Machine Learning and Geostatistical Methods for Spatial Gap-Filling of Monthly ESA CCI Soil Moisture in China

Hao Sun et al.

Summary: It is crucial to obtain large-scale, long-term, and spatial continuous soil moisture (SM) data. However, data gaps exist, especially in China, due to various limitations. Machine Learning methods, particularly Random Forest, show the best performance in filling the gaps of ESA CCI SM data in China. Such strategies combining with ML methods are suggested for gap-filling CCI SM in China.
