Hospital Frailty Risk Score predicts adverse events in older patients with vertebral compression fractures: Analysis of data in a nationwide in-patient database in Japan

Akio Shimizu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the usefulness of frailty in predicting adverse events in patients with vertebral compression fractures during hospitalization. The findings showed that a higher frailty risk was associated with increased in-hospital mortality and occurrence of complications. The Hospital Frailty Risk Score was found to be predictive of adverse events in older VCF patients.

Factors Associated With Skeletal Muscle Mass Increase by Rehabilitation in Older Adults With Vertebral Compression Fractures

Association Among Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index and Functional Prognosis in Elderly Patients with Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures

Takako Nagai et al.

Summary: This study revealed that malnutrition was present in 36.4% of elderly patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF), and a good nutritional status was positively associated with activities of daily living (ADL) and fall risk after fracture. Improving nutritional status during OVCF treatment may lead to better ADL and reduced risk of falls.

Improved activities of daily living in elderly patients with increased skeletal muscle mass during vertebral compression fracture rehabilitation

Yuki Sueyoshi et al.

Summary: Rehabilitation to gain skeletal muscle is effective in improving activities of daily living (ADLs) in elderly patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). Encouraging older VCF patients to undertake rehabilitation for building skeletal muscle can improve their ADLs and should not be refrained from due to old age and fractures.

The Role of Underweight in Active Life Expectancy Among Older Adults in Japan

Yuka Minagawa et al.

Summary: The study found that underweight older Japanese individuals have shorter life expectancy and spend fewer years in an active state compared to normal and overweight individuals. These results remained consistent even when factors such as educational attainment, smoking history, and chronic conditions were considered.

Effectiveness of Early Rehabilitation for Vertebral Compression Fractures: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Tomohiro Kobata et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of early rehabilitation on activities of daily living in patients following acute vertebral compression fracture. Patients who underwent early rehabilitation showed significantly greater improvement in Barthel Index and a higher rate of discharge to home compared to those who did not undergo rehabilitation. Early rehabilitation could be a feasible alternative for maintaining Barthel Index in patients with acute vertebral compression fracture.

Body mass index, functional disability and all-cause mortality in 330 000 older adults: The Shizuoka study

Yasuharu Tabara et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with BMI in the range of 21-27 kg/m(2) for men and 20-25 kg/m(2) for women had the lowest incidence rates of functional disability and all-cause mortality. These associations were independent of age, sex, smoking status, and cardiovascular diseases history.

Related Factors and Clinical Outcomes of Osteosarcopenia: A Narrative Review

Tatsuro Inoue et al.

Summary: Osteosarcopenia is a common geriatric condition that predominantly affects women, and is associated with increased risks of death, fractures, and falls. However, the causal relationship between osteosarcopenia and these outcomes remains unclear, highlighting the need for further longitudinal and interventional studies to fully understand this syndrome.

Risk of Hospital Readmission among Older Patients Discharged from the Rehabilitation Unit in a Rural Community Hospital: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Ryuichi Ohta et al.

Summary: This study found that older Japanese patients discharged from rehabilitation units have lower readmission rates, which may be associated with better nutritional control, a multidisciplinary approach to the management of cognitive dysfunction, and a decrease in polypharmacy.

Preliminary screening for sarcopenia and related risk factors among the elderly

Li-Chu Wu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the prevalence of sarcopenia among community-dwelling elderly in Southern Taiwan is approximately 6.0%, with males having a significantly higher prevalence than females, and the risk increasing with age. Gender, age, smoking, and body mass index were identified as significantly related risk factors for sarcopenia.

Emilie Hucteau et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop an algorithm for identifying basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL)-dependency in health insurance databases through individual assessments, health insurance data, and external validation. The final algorithm included various factors associated with ADL-dependency, resulting in estimated prevalence rates in both the study cohort and validation sample.
