Summary: This study experimentally investigated the stabilisation of soft, sensitive postglacial clay using lime-cement (50:50) as a reference and six alternative low-carbon binders. The results showed that four of the alternative binders exhibited similar or even higher strength levels compared to the reference binder after 28 days of curing. Similarly, the porosity and porosity distribution of the stabilised samples with alternative binders were comparable to the samples with the reference binder. In conclusion, the inclusion of alternative and side streams material in deep soil mixing has the potential to be a more ecological solution for soft clay improvement.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study and micro-mechanism discussion on the role of gypsum in the mechanical improvements of cement-based stabilized clay. The results show that gypsum content has a significant influence on the index and mechanical properties of the CBSC. There exists a threshold of the G/C ratio, beyond which adding excessive gypsum cannot improve the strength further.

Summary: The production of ferrite-rich calcium sulfoaluminate belite (CSABF) cement clinker, containing MgO, from ladle slag, Fe-slag, and phosphogypsum was successfully scaled up from lab-scale to a pilot demonstration. Excess CaO was found to inhibit gehlenite formation in the clinker, but it also resulted in higher ferrite content. Microstructural analysis of the clinker revealed different ferrite phases with varying amounts of titanium and iron. This study demonstrates the potential of reducing CO2 emissions and improving resource efficiency in regions with a thriving metallurgical industry.

Summary: Dry deep mixing is commonly used in Norway to improve soft and sensitive clays, traditionally using lime and cement binders with high contents. This study explores the use of lime-based binders with reduced contents and investigates their engineering properties. The results show that fine-grained quartz particles exhibit high pozzolanic properties, leading to significant strength development over time even with low binder contents. Estimations of carbon dioxide emissions as a function of binder type and strength development are also provided.

Summary: This study examined the performances of four newly developed binders in stabilising soft Finnish clay by considering both the mechanical behavior and carbon footprint. Experimental results showed that varying the amounts and types of industrial by-products used in the production of binders has the potential to significantly reduce carbon footprints. The distribution of radial deformations was highly non-uniform at different heights and loading stages. Shearing was found to be the most common mechanism leading to failure.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel binder called GS agent for soil stabilization, which is based on industrial solid wastes and shows excellent performance. Through experimental and field testing, the geotechnical properties of soft soil treated with GS agent and cement were compared and analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy was used to reveal the micro-mechanism of the stabilized soil, showing promising results.
