Seasonal and interannual changes in a coastal Antarctic zooplankton community

John A. Conroy et al.

Summary: Seasonal fluctuations in high-latitude marine ecosystems are influenced by the life cycles and adaptations of zooplankton. This study examined the biomass, size structure, and composition of zooplankton in the northern West Antarctic Peninsula over three field seasons. The results showed that zooplankton biomass peaked after phytoplankton blooms and varied in size and composition. The abundance and species of zooplankton changed between years and as the water warmed after sea-ice breakup. The results also highlighted the resilience of zooplankton to natural environmental variability but raised uncertainties about their ability to respond to climate change.

An Unprecedented Record Low Antarctic Sea-ice Extent during Austral Summer 2022

Jinfei Wang et al.

Summary: The seasonal minimum Antarctic sea ice extent in 2022 reached a record low since 1978. Thermodynamic processes played a dominant role in sea ice loss during summer, while both dynamic and thermodynamic processes contributed to negative sea ice anomalies in spring.

Iron Limitation Drives the Globally Extreme Fluorescence/Chlorophyll Ratios of the Southern Ocean

Christina Schallenberg et al.

Summary: The ratio between fluorescence and chlorophyll-a varies in the world's oceans, with the highest ratios and variability observed in the Southern Ocean. In addition to species composition and chlorophyll packaging, iron limitation also plays a significant role in influencing this ratio. This study utilized radiometry data from BGC-Argo floats in the Southern Ocean to estimate chlorophyll concentration based on the light attenuation coefficient, revealing a positive correlation between fluorescence/chlorophyll ratio and a proxy for iron limitation.

Evidence of phytoplankton blooms under Antarctic sea ice

Christopher Horvat et al.

Summary: While it has been believed that compact sea ice areas inhibit upper-ocean photosynthesis, recent observations have shown under-ice phytoplankton blooms in the Southern Ocean. This study presents evidence of widespread under-ice blooms in the Southern Ocean and identifies the conditions that support their growth. The findings suggest the need for further investigation into the mechanisms behind these blooms.

Iron and light limitation of phytoplankton growth off East Antarctica

Clara R. Vives et al.

Summary: Phytoplankton production plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle and global climate regulation. In the Southern Ocean, micronutrient iron and light are important factors limiting phytoplankton growth. A recent study found that adding iron can enhance phytoplankton growth under high light conditions.

Continental and Sea Ice Iron Sources Fertilize the Southern Ocean in Synergy

Summary: Iron release from melting continental and sea ice has an additive effect on phytoplankton activity in the Southern Ocean, leading to increased carbon export. Iron released from sea ice is more efficient in fertilizing phytoplankton compared to that from continental ice.

Temporal patterns of iron limitation in the Ross Sea as determined from chlorophyll fluorescence

Thomas J. Ryan-Keogh et al.

Summary: The Ross Sea is a highly productive region in the Southern Ocean, with a well-established seasonal cycle of phytoplankton progression linked to iron availability. A novel technique using NPQ(Glider) as a proxy for iron limitation was applied to a glider time series, revealing four stages of surface chlorophyll concentrations. High NPQ(Glider) levels and low alpha(NPQ) values indicate a potential transition from a Phaeocystis antarctica bloom to a non-iron limited diatom bloom, showcasing the importance of innovative methodologies in understanding biogeochemical cycles in the ocean.

Stirring of Sea-Ice Meltwater Enhances Submesoscale Fronts in the Southern Ocean

I Giddy et al.

Summary: In the ice-impacted Southern Ocean, the interaction between sea-ice melt, surface boundary layer forcing, and submesoscale flows plays a significant role in determining the properties of the surface mixed layer. High-resolution observations indicate that submesoscale motions have a substantial impact on the exchange of properties at the base of the mixed layer.

Decline in plankton diversity and carbon flux with reduced sea ice extent along the Western Antarctic Peninsula

Yajuan Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates how interannual variability in sea-ice conditions impacts biodiversity and biological carbon fluxes in the Western Antarctic Peninsula using a 5-year DNA metabarcoding dataset. The results indicate that sea-ice extent is a dominant factor influencing eukaryotic plankton community composition, biodiversity, and net community production, with species richness and evenness decreasing with an increase in sea surface temperature. The study concludes that eukaryotic plankton diversity and carbon cycling in the Western Antarctic Peninsula are strongly linked to sea-ice conditions.

Summary: Mixed-layer dynamics have a significant impact on nutrient and light availability for phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean. The study highlights the complex relationship between mixed-layer dynamics and net community production (NCP) on various timescales, showing that NCP is influenced by mixed layer depth differently over intraseasonal, seasonal, and interannual scales.

Factors controlling the competition between Phaeocystis and diatoms in the Southern Ocean and implications for carbon export fluxes

Cara Nissen et al.

Summary: The high-latitude Southern Ocean phytoplankton community is shaped by the competition between Phaeocystis and silicifying diatoms, with the relative abundance of these two groups controlling primary and export production, the production of dimethylsulfide, the ratio of silicic acid and nitrate available in the water column, and the structure of the food web. Phaeocystis and diatoms play important roles in high-latitude carbon cycling, with their importance mainly controlled by spatiotemporal variability in temperature and iron availability, and the succession from Phaeocystis to diatoms may happen in coastal areas. Aggregation and grazing by zooplankton are important factors to explain the simulated seasonal biomass evolution and carbon export fluxes.

Southern Ocean Biogeochemical Argo detect under-ice phytoplankton growth before sea ice retreat

Mark Hague et al.

Summary: The seasonality of sea ice in the Southern Ocean has a significant impact on the life cycle of phytoplankton, with research showing that growth of phytoplankton under the ice begins 4-5 weeks before ice retreat, rather than rapidly accumulating after retreat. Novel techniques using sea ice cover for higher light transfer and extreme low light adaptation of phytoplankton have been identified as mechanisms responsible for this early growth process.
