Role of Stratospheric Processes in Climate Change: Advances and Challenges

Wenshou Tian et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the main advances and new developments in stratosphere-troposphere coupling and stratospheric chemistry-climate interactions. It discusses the challenges of applying stratospheric signals in operational forecast models and the critical role of stratospheric chemistry in global climate change. The review also highlights the importance of considering whole-atmosphere interactions for a better understanding of stratosphere-troposphere coupling and its role in climate change.

Convective Impact on the Global Lower Stratospheric Water Vapor Budget

Rei Ueyama et al.

Summary: The direct impact of deep convection on the global lower stratospheric water vapor budget is still a debated issue. Two complementary modeling approaches are used to investigate this impact in different seasons. The results show that deep convection moistens the global lower stratosphere by approximately 0.3 ppmv, with a diurnal peak in winter and summer and relatively minor effect on global water vapor. The interannual variability of the convective impact is estimated to be up to 0.1 ppmv during 2006-2016.

Response of Tropical Overshooting Deep Convection to Global Warming Based on Global Cloud-Resolving Model Simulations

Xueke Wu et al.

Summary: Tropical overshooting deep convection (ODC) plays a crucial role in transporting boundary layer pollutants to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, with important implications for stratospheric ozone and climate. Using simulations from the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmosphere Model (NICAM), the study finds that future ODC occurrences will increase over the warmer and wetter oceanic regions, while decreasing over the hotter but drier terrestrial regions. The changes in ODC occurrences are larger for higher cloud tops and vary depending on the global temperature increase.

Tropical Cirrus in Global Storm-Resolving Models: 1. Role of Deep Convection

J. M. Nugent et al.

Summary: Pervasive cirrus clouds in the upper troposphere and tropical tropopause layer influence climate by altering radiation balance and water vapor budget. Global storm-resolving models can better simulate deep convection and cirrus with further improvements. Fine-grid models show good agreement but also differences in representing ice and snow formation.

Tropical Cirrus in Global Storm-Resolving Models: 2. Cirrus Life Cycle and Top-of-Atmosphere Radiative Fluxes

S. M. Turbeville et al.

Summary: This study investigates the representation of tropical cirrus in global storm-resolving models, which have higher resolution and explicit convection. Model differences in cirrus populations dominate over regional differences, likely driven by subgrid processes. Understanding these model differences is essential in predicting future climates accurately.

A Dataset of Overshooting Cloud Top from 12-Year CloudSat/CALIOP Joint Observations

Haoyang Li et al.

Summary: This study develops a new objective detection algorithm for overshooting cloud tops (OT) based on geostationary satellite observations. The algorithm's accuracy is verified through comparison with radar echo and MODIS 250 m cloud images. The statistically analyzed long time series data shows that OT events are mainly concentrated in equatorial and low latitude regions, with higher frequency in summer. The study also highlights the close connection between the seasonal shift of OT and the global distribution of average precipitation.

An assessment of tropopause characteristics of the ERA5 and ERA-Interim meteorological reanalyses

Lars Hoffmann et al.

Summary: The tropopause layer plays a key role in atmospheric chemistry and physics. This study compares the representation and characteristics of the lapse rate tropopause based on ECMWF reanalysis data. The comparison reveals significant differences between ERA5 and ERA-Interim tropopause data, particularly on small spatiotemporal scales. ERA5 shows larger variability and improved spatiotemporal resolution, providing more accurate information for future tropopause-related studies.

Persistence of moist plumes from overshooting convection in the Asian monsoon anticyclone

Sergey M. Khaykin et al.

Summary: This study uses unique observations to investigate the formation and maintenance of lower stratosphere water vapor in the Asian monsoon anticyclone region. The research reveals the dual role of overshooting convection in the anticyclone, which can lead to both hydration and dehydration. The findings highlight the importance of convection and recirculation in transporting water vapor into the stratosphere.
