Dynamic Modeling of Interactions between Shallow Slow-Slip Events and Subduction Earthquakes

Qingjun Meng et al.

Summary: Shallow slow-slip events (SSEs) contribute to strain release near subduction interfaces, and recent monitoring studies have shown possible interactions between SSEs and mega-thrust earthquakes. This study uses a dynamic earthquake simulator to investigate the interactions and implications of SSEs and mega-thrust earthquakes for seismic and tsunami hazards. The results demonstrate that both SSEs and earthquakes can occur, and their interactions over multiple earthquake cycles are observed. The size of an earthquake is correlated with preceding SSE activities, with small earthquakes rupturing only low-strength patches and large earthquakes rupturing both low and high-strength patches.

Long-lived shallow slow-slip events on the Sunda megathrust

Rishav Mallick et al.

Summary: A 32-year-long slow-slip event occurred on a shallow part of the Sunda megathrust, perhaps because of stress accumulation after fluid expulsion, according to an analysis of the deformation history of the area and physics-based simulations. This study highlights the potential for missing or mis-modelling these transient phenomena globally and provides a method for detecting slow-slip events that could substantially revise earthquake and tsunami hazard and risk assessments for populations living near fault lines.

Shallow Slow Earthquake Episodes Near the Trench Axis off Costa Rica

Satoru Baba et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of very low frequency earthquakes (VLFEs) around the Nicoya Peninsula, mainly near the trench axis and overlapping with large slip areas of slow slip events. Additionally, low frequency tremor signals were found to occur within the same time windows as VLFEs on high-frequency seismogram envelopes.
